HOW TO BECOME A SC CERTIFIED SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES
TEACHER (grades 9-12) AT NGU IN 4 YEARS
Your advisor will guide you through the various parts of this program, but it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to become acquainted with and comply with all program requirements. Failure to follow all of the procedures below will require you to remain at NGU longer than 4 years.
1. You must take all your HIST and EDUC courses in the orderthey are listed on the Suggested Course Sequence. Build your work and extra curricular commitments for each semester around the times these required courses are offered.
2. Add in the required General Education and Social Studies Core courses that are still open and that fit with your work and extracurricular schedule, until you are taking the amount of credits listed for your semester on the Suggest Course Sequence.
3. If you plan on taking summer school courses . . . see which General Education and Social Studies Core courses you need are being offered in summer school BEFORE selecting your spring courses.
4. If you are changing majors or have transferred into NGU . . . you must carefully compare your transcript with the Individual Curriculum Worksheet and Suggested Course Sequence, and clearly mark all course requirements that you have met. Make sure your advisor has all this information.
5. In your first year, and totally on your own initiative, you must register for, pay for, and pass the PRAXIS I. This exam, also known as the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), has three parts:

**You will probably want to take the computerized version, although there is also a paper and pencil version.

6. By the end of your sophomore year you will need to have met all of the following requirements and to apply to be admitted to the secondary Social Studies education program:
General admission requirements to NGU’s secondary education program:
- Pass the Praxis I exam (If you scored 24 or higher on the ACT or 1650 or higher on the SAT you are exempted from the PRAXIS I.)
- Complete a minimum of 45 credit hours
- Earn a C or better in each of the following courses: ENGL 1310, ENGL 1320, EDUC 1210, EDUC 2230, and in COMM 2300.
- Maintain an accumulated, overall GPA of 2.5 or better based on a 4.0 scale.
- Recommendations from the professor for EDUC 1210 and the Dean of the College of Education, or designee.
- Students must also submit an application for admission which includes Assessment of Dispositions (AOD) forms from two faculty members and two writing samples.
- Be approved by the faculty of the College of Education and the Teacher Education Committee.
Additionaladmission requirements for the
B.S. in Social Studies Education with History Concentration
1. Complete 5 more credit hours than the general admission requirements, for a total of
50 semester hours of undergraduate studies. These 50 hours must includeat least 12 hours of classes with a HIST prefix, and 12 hours from the Social Studies Core.
2. Earn a C or higher in all HIST prefix classes (includes all History courses in the
History Core as well as those listed under General Education), and in all Social Studies Core classes.
3. Have satisfactorily completed the 30 hours of field observations required in EDUC
1210 and 3410.
4. Follow the Suggested Course Sequence.
7. Early in the semester before your Directed Student Teaching, you must return to the PRAXIS website and register, pay, and pass the following 3 PRAXIS exams:

**There is no way to be exempted from these three exams.
**You must request that your scores be mailed to NorthGreenvilleUniversity.
**You must pass all 3 exams before beginning Directed Student Teaching.**
8. In your last semester you must successfully complete your Directed Student Teaching. You may not take coursework in the semester in which you do your Directed Student Teaching experience.
9. Two very important components of this program not highlighted above, are:
a. A portfolio of your work in your field experiences and Directed Student Teaching, and that is carefully aligned with ADEPT, the SC Academic Standards, and NCSS standards.
b. An independent historical research paper produced in Senior Seminar in the semester before your student teaching.
