INDIAN NAVY MISSILES

SUB/SURFACE TO SURFACE/LAND

PRITHVI-III (DHANUSH)
Function / Surface to surface
Warhead / 500 kg (Pre-Fragmented, Incendiary, Bomblet and Cluster)
Length / 8.56 meter /
Diameter / 90 cm
Launch Wight / 4400 kg
Guidance / Inertial
Range / 40-350 km
Payload / 500 kg
Status / Under trials
Guidance / Inertial Navigation System (INS)
Platforms / INS SUBHADRA and SUVARNA OPVs (probably fitted)
Remarks:Dhanush (meaning bow) is the naval version of the Prithvi family. The missile has been developed by DRDO and manufactured by the Hyderabad based M/S Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) under the project named K-15. Since Apr 2000, India has carried out more than 6 tests of the missile. More recently, the same codename (K-15) has been extensively used for Sagarika missile. The last successful test of the missile from INS SUBHADRA OPV was carried out in Bay of Bengal in Mar 07. Firing of Dhanush from SUBHADRA has certain limitations, such as:
a.Due to short range of the missile, the ship has to close the coast of the adversary making the ship itself vulnerable.
b.Poor guidance system.
c.The missile unit includes numerous vehicles that could be detected once deployed
SAGARIKA (OCEANIC)
Function / SLCM /
Payload / 500 kg
Range / 500-750 km
Length / 8 meter
Diameter / 1 meter
Propulsion / Solid/Liquid
Flight Time / 7-8 min
Guidance / Satellite GPS
Remarks:Project (K-15) Sagarika (meaning Oceanic) is a 2-stage (solid-initial and liquid-terminal stage) Sub Launch Ballistic Missile (SLBM). The project was initiated in 1992. In 2005, DRDO had sought assistance from Russia and technical guidance from Israel for the SAGARIKA project contemplating an extended range of over 2500 km. The missile was first time test fired on 26 Feb 08 from an under water pontoon developed by M/S Larsen and Toubro (L&T). This was the 6th test of missile, whereas, it was first declared test by India. Earlier, tests were secretly conducted since 2004. The missile is likely to become operational by 2011-12. Earlier, reports suggested that Sagarika is a derivative of Israeli Popeye SLCM. However, various reports also suggest that Sagarika could be a derivative of Prithvi-III (Dhanush) missile.
BrahMos (PJ-10) MISSILE (YAKHONT)
Range / 290 km /
Velocity / Cruise750 m/sec
Terminal 680 m/sec

Propulsion / Liquid propellant for ramjet, solid propellant for booster
Combat readiness / 4 minutes
Launch type / Surface, Land, Sub-surface and air launch versions.
Platforms / Rajput class and Su-30MKI (being fitted)
Remarks:
1.India and Russian collaboration had developed BrahMos for Indian Armed Forces. Details are as under:
a.Indian Army. One Regiment has already been equipped with 4 systems with three launchers each. Indian Army is planning to equip each launcher with 5 missiles that makes 60 missiles for one regiment. In addition to the present holding of one regiment the army has contracted for two more regiments to be equipped with BrahMos. The total requirement for Indian Army is probably 180 missiles so far.
b.Indian Navy. For equipping 8 x ships, India has raised the future demand of 240 BrahMos (each ship require 6 launching systems and 30 missiles). In addition IN want to equip 3 x Shivalik class (under construction in India), which would need another 120 missiles. The total requirement for IN is around 360-400 missiles.
c.Indian Air Force. As per the initial plan, Indian Air Force was planning to upgrade 18 x Su-30MKI aircraft with BrahMos missiles but as per the revised plan IAF would modify 40 x aircraft. Each aircraft will be quipped with one missile but IAF plans to keep 5 missiles in stock for each platform.
2.The missile employs stealth technology, has supersonic flight speed and a completely independent guidance system based on the fire and forget concept. After launch, BrahMos descents to a low altitude, combined with its supersonic speed and sea skimming flight mode in the homing phase, make it possible to avoid detection and tracking by air defence systems.
3.Reportedly, following IN units are now equipped/being equipped with BrahMos naval version:
a.INS RAJPUT
b.INS RANVIR
c.INS RANVIJAY (under progress)
d.INS RANJIT (under progress)
4.Development of HypersonicBrahMos.India had developed land and surface versions of BrahMos, whereas, trials of sub-launch version are awaited pending availability of launch platform. Furthermore, air launch version is being developed. Recently, India had announced to develop Hypersonic BrahMos (BrahMos-II) and the first laboratory test of BrahMos-II was successfully conducted on 13 May 08. When fully developed, BrahMos-II would be difficult to detect and would have increased kinetic impact on the target. The BrahMos-II is planned to be inducted in the Indian Armed Forces in next 5 years.
SS-N-27 – KLUB
Function / Ship/Submarine Launched Cruise Missile /
Length / 8.09 meter
Weight / 1750 kg
Fuel / Solid propellant
Warhead Weight / 450 kg
Range / 300 km
AcquisitionRange / 20-25 Km
Guidance / Inertial Guidance System through cruise phase in accordance with target designation data input in its onboard control system
Trajectory / 10–15 meter above sea level in cruise phase and 5 meter above water in terminal phase
Platform / Kilo class submarines and Talwar class
Remarks:
1.The missile 3M-54E1 is compatible with standard western torpedo tubes. A solid propellant booster propels the missile from a multi purpose vertical launcher onboard a surface ship or submarine torpedo tube of 533mm diameter. While for most of the engagement the 3M-54E1 missile cruises sub-sonically using turbojet propulsion. For the final stage its forward section separates and missile accelerates to supersonic speed using a solid booster. This, combined with an attack altitude of around 15 feet, makes the missile a difficult target for ships’ self-defence weapons to engage.
2.Seven Indian Kilo class S/Ms have already been modified to fire Klub-S in anti shipping role including INS/M SINDHUGOSH and INS/M SINDHUVIJAY with Klub-S LAM. Moreover, INS/M SINDHUKIRTI is being equipped with LAM in India with Russian help. Three Talwar class ships are also fitted with vertical launch Klub missiles.
3.Failure of Klub-S Missile.IN acquired about 175 Klub missiles including 28 Klub-S (LAMs) and has conducted numerous test fires of the missile. However, every time the missiles splashed far short of its target. Indian experts attributed failure to “delay in data transmission between onboard gyro, Fire Control System (FCS) and missile”. It was also reported that an interface unit was being developed to rectify the defect without replacing gyros. Installation of French Inertial Navigation System (INS) was also being considered to arrest the problem. The problem has been resolved on SINSHUVIJAY.
