Title: India Coin Project

Peace, as defined by Webster’s dictionary, is “freedom from civil disturbance”.

Imagine a world where there was no disturbance of any kind. Every human treated all living things with respect and dignity. Sound too good to be true in our crazy world today? Well, maybe it’s not too late. You have noticed lately that our world needs a fresh dose of peace! Fortunately, you have been transported back in time. What?! What happened? You were just sitting on your bed working on your social studies homework and BOOM! You didn’t mean to get transported to India during the early 1900s—more than 100 years ago—but here you are! You look around and spot a man passing out “peace coins”. These peace coins look different than an ordinary coin to you, however, and you decide to get a closer look. What are these coins and even more important--who is this man? Well, he is none other than Mohandas Gandhi. Your job is to find out more about him through research—use your book, use the Internet (a great site is use any books that you can find on him.

Your missionShould you choose to accept (AND IT’D BE A REALLY GOOD IDEA TO ACCEPT!!)

Find out all the information you can about Mohandas Gandhi. Using thisinformation, recall your experience with him on the day you were transported back in time. Create the peace coin as you imagine that it would have looked. Be sure to include accurate depictions (drawings, pictures, cartoons) that you feel describes the meaning of peace. Finally, tell about an experience you witness as Gandhi passes out the peace coins. Why is he giving these out? What was the person doing to earn one? How does this make you feel? How are you affected? Does it change your thinking any at all? Don’t forget to tell about how you are transported back to the year 2010 and what you think now that you are back at MMAM. How does this new experience affect your own life?

Your final project will consist of a paper with three paragraphs and a coin that you have created. You may draw the coin or create it using any creative powers you possess.
