“INDEPENDENT READING” Requirements:

For spring semester, you will reada series of booksthat you bring to school and take home every day. You will be expected to read your ELAR book anytime you have a spare moment, after you finish other work, during advisory, before school or after school.

RULES:

1 No “graphic novels” with only thought and speech bubbles.

2 You MUST read at least ONE biography during this nine-weeks.

3 Don’t read anything you have read before.

STEPS:

1 Read at least 15 minutes non-stop.

2 Write a reading response on notebook paper. The question list is posted in the classroom AND on my website.

3 Follow the instructions on the question list to write entries in the correct form for full credit.

4 Before every progress report and report card you will turn in your journal entries, gathered together in a folder, for a major grade. By the end of the nine-weeks all of the journal entries should be gathered together in the folder. I have manila folders for you to use.

5 Each journal entry, done correctly, earns 10 points. Each grading period, the point values increase.

POINT VALUES

1st progress report – 5 journal entries & mini book report (60 points)

2nd progress report – 7 journal entries & mini book report (140 points)

3rd progress report – 7 journal entries & mini book report (220 points)

MINI BOOK REPORTS:

Before each progress report and report card you will also complete one extra item.

For fiction and non-fiction books, you will complete a “mini book report” form. (on the back).

For the biography book you will write a letter to yourself AS IF you were the biography subject telling you about one important even from his or her life.

EXTRA CREDIT

If you read for 15 minutes in one sitting, have your parent or your advisory teacher sign your reading log. Two 15 minute sessions with a signature gets you one point extra credit, up to 10 points.

You have to do the reading anyway. Do it at a time when someone else can hold you accountable so you can get extra credit.

Extra Credit

Have an adult verify you read for 15 minutes. You only have to read 15 minutes to do a journal response. Two 15-minute session of reading WITH signatures can earn you one point of extra credit on your “Independent Reading” major grade for ______nine-weeks.
