INDEPENDENT READING PROGRAM-IRP
*** Students MUST check their AR test history before reading a book. If the test was already taken by the student, the computer will not allow them to retake it. Any books read over the summer will NOT count. NO books may be re-read. ***
1. The IRP percentage will be part of the homework grade (15%) during the second marking period. It will then be 20% of the total reading grade during the third and fourth marking periods. A letter will be sent home at the end of the 2nd marking period as a reminder.
2. Students are challenged to read 1000 (or more) pages at their mid to higher ZPD level during each marking period.
To accomplish this, they should choose a variety of genres to read at least 20-30 minutes daily.
3. Upon completion of a book, the student will take an AR test in school and ONLY in the presence of the reading teacher. The student should present the quizzes taken and completed book log to be initialed by the teacher.
4. If the book does not have an AR test, it will NOT count for IRP. Story maps will not be an option in 6th grade.
5. Double pages are given for the following types of books: National/International award winners, books corresponding to the reading curriculum, and only non-fiction books that have an AR test. (250 pgs. = 500 pgs.)
6. The student must receive a 70% or higher on the AR test to count for credit.
7. If there are too many pictures, illustrations, or photographs in the IRP book, the final number of pages will be determined by the teacher. (239pgs = +/- 119pgs)
8. The student must have parental approval if the book is considered MG+ or UG (middle grade plus or upper grade). An IRP Content Contract must be signed and attached to the IRP log.
9. These rules may be adjusted at the teacher’s discretion based on selective situations.
10. The student may read over 1000 pages to receive bonus points:
1500 pages = +1 pts
2000 pages = +2 pts
+1 points for each additional 500 pages
11. IRP grading procedures and examples:
1000 pages = 100%
900 pages = 90%
835 pages = 84%
733 pages = 73%
