About the Organisation:
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is an independent Commonwealth Government statutory Agency. The Bureau is governed by a Commission and is entirely separate from transport regulators, policy makers and service providers.
The ATSB’s function is to improve safety and public confidence in the aviation, marine and rail modes of transport through excellence in:
  • independent investigation of transport accidents and other safety occurrences;
  • safety data recording, analysis and research; and
  • fostering safety awareness, knowledge and action.
The ATSB is established by the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003 (TSI Act) and conducts its investigations in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Under the TSI Act, it is not a function of the ATSB to apportion blame or provide a means for determining liability. The ATSB does not investigate for the purpose of taking administrative, regulatory or criminal action.
About the Position:
The ATSB is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) locatedin the ATSB’s Canberra office.
The main duty of this position is to undertake technical investigations into aviation accidents and incidents in accordance with the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003. Other duties include liaising with various organisations including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Airservices Australia, other Commonwealth and State authorities and the broader Australian/international aviation industry. The role may also involve undertaking research into various aspects of transport safety. Note, on-site investigation of fatal accidents in sometimes harsh conditions is a part of the job (specific ATSB conditions of employment apply).

Duty Statement:
  1. As a member of a team, or individually, undertake technical investigations into aviation accidents and incidents and draft reports on behalf of the Commissioner in accordance with the Transport Safety Investigation (TSI) Act 2003.
  1. Liaise with various organisations including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Airservices Australia, other Commonwealth and State authorities or government agencies and the Australian aviation industry.
  1. Undertake research and analysis, as required, into various aspects of aviation safety.
  1. Represent the ATSB, as required, at inter-Government meetings, Parliamentary committees, industry conferences and on other committees.
  1. Review and prepare amendments, guidance material, and instructions to investigators and other documents relevant to the work of the ATSB, including technical publications.
  1. Participate in the development, management and use of aviation safety occurrence database systems.

Induction and development

The successful applicant will be employed at the Transport Safety Investigator level or, potentially, at a higher level (Senior Transport Safety Investigator) based on their assessed ability to meet the ATSB Work Level Standards (WLS) at the time of engagement. The applicant will be provided with opportunities to undertake duties at that level while completing post-appointment induction training, on the job training and specialist training (towards the Diploma of Transport Safety Investigation).
Selection Criteria
1. / Qualifications and experience
  • Hold or have held during the previous 24 months, an aircraft maintenance engineer licence issued by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority, with additional ratings to the original licence
  • Demonstrate a wide-ranging knowledge of the commercial aviation industry (particularly within WA) with extensive experience as a LAME on general aviation fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters and Class A aircraft maintenance systems
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer or maintenance supervisor desirable

  • Knowledge of international conventions such asICAO Annex 13, and key Australian legislation such as the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003
