Purpose
- To have a consistent format for referring to core componentsin all SRP summary statements for multi-project grant applications submitted through ASSIST.
- To relate the ASSIST core number to core letter designations that the applicant may have used in the text of the application. The summary statement needs to be congruent with the applicationbookmarks and the IMPAC II nomenclature for cores so program staff, council members, and grants management staff do not have ambiguous information about the review.
Scope
This SOP applies to the preparation and editing ofall summary statements for multi-project applications submitted through ASSIST that include cores (administrative cores, research cores, scientific cores, etc.)
Procedure
In the HEADERS section, use the ASSIST nomenclature followed by the applicant’s nomenclature if needed for clarity.
In the Resume and Summary of Discussion, the first mention of each core should include both the title and the ASSIST nomenclature (e.g., Core 001)followed by the applicant’s nomenclature (if any, e.g., Core A) in parentheses.
- If applicant does not use old nomenclature, type:
Administrative Core (Core 001)
Core Leader: EINSTEIN, A.
- If applicant does use the old nomenclature, type:
Administrative Core (Core 001/Core A)
Core Leader: EINSTEIN, A.
The header of each core in the body of the summary statement should include the ASSIST nomenclature, the applicant’s nomenclature (if any) in parentheses.
- If applicant does not use old nomenclature, type:Core 001: Administrative Core
- If applicant doesuse old nomenclature, type:Core 001 (Core A): Administrative Core
In the text of the core critiques, cores should be referred to by the applicant nomenclature rather than the ASSIST nomenclature.
- Only use letters such as A, B, and C to refer to cores if the application uses such lettering for cores.
- Inmany cases, reviewers will refer to cores by their titles (e.g., Administrative Core, Scientific Core) or simply as “the core” rather than nomenclature such as “Core-001” or “Core A.” These designations should remain if they are clear.
The Standardization Committee’s Summary Statements working group will provide a formatting template for multi-project applications that will include guidance for ASSIST nomenclature for both SROs and technical writers. During final editing of the summary statement, the SRO is responsible for confirming that correct letters have been used for cores and making any corrections required.
Definitions
ASSIST:The Application Submission System & Interface for Submission Tracking (ASSIST)is a web-based system used by applicants to prepare multi-project grant applications using the SF424 Research & Related form set and to submit multi-project grant applications electronically through Grants.gov to NIH and other participating agencies.
Core: A service or resource component in a multi-project application. Examples include Administrative Core, Research Core, Resource Core, Scientific Core, etc. ASSIST has a separate component for Administrative Core (Admin-Core) and other cores (Scientific Cores). ASSIST automatically gives three-digit consecutive numbers starting with 001 to cores of each type regardless of the nomenclature used by the applicants in the text of the application. For example, ASSIST will number the Administrative Core as Admin-Core 001, and will number other cores as Core-001, Core-002, Core-003, etc., even if applicants name the cores Core A, Core B, Core C, etc.
Multi-project application: An application having multiple research projects, resource components, and other components, depending on the activity code. Multi-project applications include P01, P50, P30, U19, U54, UM1, etc.
Multi-project ASSIST macro:NIAID macro to pull information from IMPAC II into the summary statement shell. The NIAID ASSIST multi-project macro uses the number designations for the Cores that appear in IMPAC II and in the IMPAC II Excel score matrix. Core-001.
Summary Statement:The official record of the review meeting, consisting of a Resume and Summary of Discussion prepared by the SRO for discussed applications, the Descriptions provided by the applicant for the overall multi-project application and for each component of the application, and the individual reviewers’ critiques for each component.
