Title: Adoration and Thanksgiving in the Lord's Prayer (Part 2 of 4)

Text: Matthew 6:9-13 & Luke 11:2-4

Matthew 6:9-10 (NIV84)

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Lord’s Prayer is the example prayer Jesus gave to His disciples when they asked Him how to pray. This is not the only example prayer in the Bible. For example, the Psalms are a whole book of example prayers. There are similarities and differences between the Lord’s Prayer and other example prayers. Many times the acrostic ACTS is used to help us remember to pray with Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. This week we are going to focus on the closely related topics of Adoration and Thanksgiving in the Lord’s Prayer. Adoration focuses on praising God for who He is, while Thanksgiving focuses on praising God for what He has done. So, it is possible to Adore God without using the word Adoration and to Thank God without using the word Thanksgiving. What we can learn about Adoring and Thanking God from the Lord’s Prayer?
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV84)
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
[For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]
Luke 11:2-4 (NIV84)
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“ ‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’ ”
______
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV84)

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
