The Department of Social Policy and Social Work is honoured to announce the call of applications for the Jonathan Bradshaw Scholarship to prospective postgraduate taught students. Jonathan Bradshaw has been associated with the Department for almost 50 years, contributing to numerous landmark studies of poverty, minimum income standards and child well-being during this time. He was founding Director of the Social Policy Research Unit from 1973 to 1987, served two terms as Head of Department of Social Policy And Social Work 1988-1994 and 2003-2007, and was Director of the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences 1994-1998. He was appointed Academician of the Learned Societies for the Social Sciences in 1996, Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005 for services to child poverty and Fellow of the British Academy in 2010. He continues to date to publish on various aspects of child poverty and well-being.

The Department of Social Policy and Social Work will offer one (1) scholarship worth £6,000 to prospective students that study on a full time basis. All offer holders are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Overseas scholarship recipients would need to fund the remainder of their tuition fee through alternative funds. To honour the ground-breaking contributions of Jonathan Bradshaw to the comparative study of child well-being and poverty, we anticipate that the recipient of the scholarship will explore in their independent research study (Dissertation) issues related to well-being and poverty,that apply nationally, comparatively or internationally.

In order to be eligible you must:

  • Have received an offer for one of the following programmes: MA in Social Policy, MResSocial Policy, MA in Comparative and International Social Policy, MA in Global Social Policy and MA in Global Crime and Justice.   • Have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent prior to commencing the Masters programme.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic and work excellence.
