In Class We Will Be Viewing Far and Away and Analyzing Aspects of the Film As It Relates

In class we will be viewing Far and Away and analyzing aspects of the film as it relates to the content presented in Chapters 13-16. You are expected to write a 5 paragraph essay out of class and turn it in on Friday, February 6thfor a test grade (Time to write the essay will NOT be provided in class!). Your essay will be focused around the following themes presented in Chapters 13-16: Immigration, Urbanization, Politics of the Gilded Age, Industrialization, and Westward Migration all of which highlights the experience of people living in American during the 1890s until the early 1900s.

The structure of your essay will include the following:

Introductory Paragraph (1st Paragraph):Minimum of 5 sentences including your THESIS

Introduce the time frame of US History we are studying and the broad themes of

the US during that time. (Examples will be given and discussed in class)

Example Thesis: The movie, Far and Away presented aspects of USimmigration,

urbanization, politics, industrialization, and westward migration during the 1890s through the early 1900s.

1st Body Paragraph (2nd Paragraph): Minimum of 5 sentences including topic sentence.

The first sentence should be a topic sentence aboutImmigration. You will define/explain US immigration in the late 1890s to early 1900s including terms from your homework and class work. Discuss “new vs. old immigrant” After you have written a few sentences explaining immigration in the US then give an example/s from the movie. For example, discuss who from the movie immigrates to the US, from where, how, and why.

2nd Body Paragraph (3rd Paragraph): Minimum of 5 sentences including a transition/topic sentence.

The first sentence should be a transition sentence, connecting immigration to the next

topics: Urbanization/Politics of the Gilded Age/Industrialization. You will define/explain urbanization, politics of the Gilded Ageand industrialization including the problems and concerns associated with it in the US during the 1890s-early 1900s. After you have written a few sentences explaining urbanization, politics, and industrialization in the US then give an example/s

from the movie. For example what was the city like, where did they live, what did they do, and what problems did they face? Who from the movie was an example of a ward boss/connection to political machines and how it used immigrants.

(You are welcome to have more than one paragraph to address all aspects of these topics)

3rd Body Paragraph (4th Paragraph): Minimum of 5 sentences including a transition/topic sentence.

The first sentence should be a transition sentence, connecting immigration, urbanization, politics,

and industrialization to the next topic: Westward Migration. You will define/explain

westward migration including the advertizing and incentives the US government used to

encourage settlement. You will need to discuss the methods used to get there and the problems settlers faced and then give examples from the movie. For example how did they hear about land out west, how did they plan to get it, and then how did they achieve or fail in gaining their land.

Conclusion(5th Paragraph): Minimum of 5 sentences giving a summary and restating the thesis regarding immigration, urbanization, politics, industrialization, and westward migration as it relates to the movie Far and Away. While concluding the themes and the movie make a statement as to whether or not you were able to connect the historical content from Chapters 13-16 to the film and if you recommend it to be shown in future classes and WHY.
