IMPROVEMENTS INSIDE AND OUT FOR THE

NEW KIA PREGIO

The Kia Pregio, the van that changed the shape of the Australian van market, now comes with more comfort for the driver, more refinement, a stylish new look but retains all the features and value for money that has enabled the Pregio to leap to the top of the van sales charts.

“The Kia Pregio has proven to be even more successful than we hoped,” says Ric Hull, Managing Director of Kia Automotive Australia. “Not only is it now positioned firmly in the number two slot in the Australian van market, it has even topped the van sales charts for a number of months and has been Australia’s number one diesel van since its launch.”

“The Pregio has achieved this by offering a larger than class average payload and interior volume, an outstanding level of standard equipment, a highly competitive price and a support programme that is more akin to a luxury car than a van. The new Pregio maintains everything that has made the Pregio a success and adds a host of new features and refinements.”

The Pregio is instantly recognizable thanks to its new nose, which provides enhanced safety, new, larger, brighter headlights and new impact absorbing bumpers which are colour matched. A new bumper and a new step also feature at the rear of the new Pregio.

Inside there is a new dashboard and the driver’s seat has been repositioned to provide more legroom and a wider range of backrest adjustment. The bulkhead, which is removable in two sections, has a larger window, and this, combined with new, larger remotely adjustable door mirrors enhance visibility and safety.

Under the skin refinements have been made to the suspension to improve ride quality under all load conditions.

The features that haven’t changed in the new Kia Pregio include the 1.2 tonne payload and 4.1 cubic metre load area easily accessible through wide opening rear and side doors and the powerful and economical 2.7 litre diesel engine mated to a five speed manual gearbox.

Standard equipment includes power steering, electric windows, remote central locking, air conditioning, CD player, a third middle seat that folds down to provide a storage area, cup holders and cloth upholstery.

Kia has recognized that a cost effective transport solution is more than just a low purchase price and a high equipment level. It is supporting Pregio owners with a three year/100,000 km warranty, a full 24 hour a day roadside assistance programme and access to a loan vehicle programme if a Pregio is off the road for a warrantable repair to ensure that the Pregio supplies a really cost effective transport solution.

The Pregio has proven a success with both small businesses and fleets that require a highly cost effective transport solution that provides excellent value for money at the purchase point, low running costs and a load compartment that can meet a wide range of load carrying requirements.

The new Kia Pregio goes on sale in Australia on 1 July 2004 with a recommended retail price of $22,950.

KIA PREGIO – Value for money, low running costs, peace of mind.

The Kia Pregio is a fully equipped, ready to operate van. The $22,950 price includes the sort of features that some other van suppliers charge for, including comfort and convenience features such as air conditioning, power steering, CD audio system, remote central locking and electric windows as well as essential business features such as a load compartment with a removable fully sealed bulkhead, wide opening rear and side doors, double skinned lower sides and two rear interior lights.

The powerful 2.7 litre diesel engine, designed specially for business use, is at the heart of the Pregio’s low running costs. It provides a significant fuel consumption advantage over its petrol-powered rivals, especially in the urban environments in which most vans operate. This is particularly the case in uses that require the van to be left with its engine running to provide power for equipment such as chiller or freezer units. The Pregio includes as standard a cab mounted engine idle speed control to further enhance this use.

Backed by more than 120 Kia dealers throughout Australia, a three year/100,000 warranty with 24 hour roadside assistance and a loan car programme, the Kia Pregio makes an eminently sensible business proposition that will please every accountant looking to cut costs and maximize profits.

KIA PREGIO – The Load Compartment

The load compartment in the Pregio has been designed to meet the demanding requirements of business users who need an easily accessible, flexible load space that may be adapted quickly and easily to different business applications.

The key features of the load space are:

  • Easy access through either the rear door that opens vertically and, with a ground clearance of two metres, provides weather protection when open, or through a wide opening side sliding door. The rear door has a minimum width of 1050 mm that, combined with a minimum interior width of 1060 mm, means standard one metre pallets may be loaded directly into the Pregio. Both doors may be opened from the inside. Remote control central locking adds to both security and convenience.
  • With a load volume of 4.1 cubic metres, the Pregio has a maximum length of 2650 mm and a maximum width of 1560 mm. The floor to roof height is 1210 mm, while the rear step is a low 640 mm. The side sliding door has a load lip at 630 mm, with a step at 490 mm to assist access.
  • There is a full height sealed bulkhead between the load and passenger compartments with a new, larger window built into it. The bulkhead is easily removable in sections for walk through access if required.
  • There are four window panels in the rear that can be easily removed – they are pre-cut, more than halving fitting time – and windows installed as required. For added safety and security these panels are supplied with bars across them on the inside, which may also be removed as required.
  • The interior has double skin lining to half height; the roof is fully lined for sound and heat insulation and the floor has a removable rubber floor mat.
  • Two interior lights are fitted to the load area and for added convenience they may be operated individually or remotely from the cab. There are tie down points in convenient places.

KIA PREGIO – The cab, designed for business and comfort

The cab, with its new dashboard, new door trims and revised driver’s seat, in the Kia Pregio is designed to provide both a comfortable and a business-orientated environment. The key features include:

  • Three seats, in a class where many vans have two seats, with comfortable cloth upholstery.
  • The centre seat folds down to provide a table, a locker and two cup holders. There are a further two cup holders in the dashboard.
  • The convenience of power windows, the security of remote central locking and ease of use provided by power steering.
  • Good visibility supplied for the forward control driving position, twin new door mirrors, a new, larger window in the bulkhead, a rear window with heating and wash wipe and a tailgate mounted mirror to aid reversing to loading docks.
  • Digital audio system with CD player and twin speakers.

KIA PREGIO – The 2.7 litre 62 kW engine

There can be no doubt that the ideal engine for a commercial vehicle is a diesel and preferably one designed for commercial vehicle work. This is exactly what the Kia Pregio has, a 2.7 litre 62 kW diesel engine developed for a long, economical life.

So why choose a diesel?

  • The economy advantages are obvious: Under all operating conditions, the 2.7 litre Kia diesel will offer better fuel consumption than a petrol engine.
  • Diesel engines are inherently more economical when on or near idle and this means that for businesses that require the engine to be a power source, for a chiller unit for example, and the engine running all the time, there is a considerable fuel saving. This ability is further enhanced with the standard fitment of hand idle speed control.
  • The fuel consumption advantage offered by a diesel is at its most marked on low engine speeds and slow driving, in other words in urban environments where a van is most likely to be used.
  • The 2.7 litre Kia diesel engine offers a huge 172 Nm of torque. This is the essential figure for commercial use as the more torque, the less impact the size of the load has on performance, and combined with 62 kW of power, performance in the Pregio is never going to be a question.
  • Diesel engines are renowned for their long term durability and consistent performance under demanding working conditions.

To further enhance the range of the 2.7 litre diesel, the new Pregio has a larger fuel tank, up five litres, and refinement is improved with new double sealing around the engine compartment.

KIA PREGIO – Suspension and drivetrain.

The rear suspension in the Kia Pregio, two stage multi-leaf springs, has been designed specifically for the van. It has been designed specifically to have the minimum impact on the size of the load space, while offering similar performance whether the Pregio is full or empty. It has been upgraded for the new Pregio with new suspension mounts and larger bushes.

The revised front coil spring suspension completes a chassis that provides an ideal combination of comfort and load carrying ability, now better bump absorption and ride quality. The diameter of the front anti-roll bar has also been increased from 23 to 25 mm to improve handling.

The gearbox is a smooth shifting five speed unit, with the gear stick mounted close to the steering wheel for ease of use.

The brakes in the Kia Pregio are strong and, with ventilated disks at the front, are designed to provide the Pregio with fade-free braking even when fully loaded.

The Kia Pregio is built around a strong safety cell, developed by Kia’s super computer development system. The basic structure absorbs impact and spreads it around the cell to minimize intrusion into the passenger area, a feature enhanced by the new nose providing additional crumple zones.

The structure has also been designed to survive the stresses of a tough working life. Additional safety features include a rear fog light and height adjustable headlights.
