Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is intended as a Substantial Vocational Qualification at Level 2 and has been developed for schools and colleges to deliver to learners aged in the 16-19 age group either on a full or part-time basis. This qualification is for learners who have a keen interest in the motorsport vehicle maintenance and repair industry and are looking to progress into employment within this industry.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification and learners are not expected to have any prior knowledge or experience, however an interest in the subject area is advisable. The content level of this qualification would be similar to the study required for GCSE grades A*- C.

What does this qualification cover?

The content of this qualification has been designed to develop the learners understanding of the motorsport vehicle maintenance and repairindustry. It will develop the specialist technical knowledge and practical skills required to work in this industry alongside the development of wider transferable skills.

The mandatory generic units cover essential knowledge and skills such as; health & safety,knowledge of motorsport event regulations and fabrication, tools and measuring devices. Thesemandatory units develop the transferable skills required to work within a number of job roles within the motorsport industry.

The mandatory motorsportunits focus on specific technical knowledge and practical skills the learner will require to work in the motorsport vehicle maintenance and repair industry including;the removal and replacement of motorsport vehicle engine systems and components, motorsport vehicle electrical systems and components, motorsport vehicle chassis units and components,motorsport vehicle transmission systems and components and inspecting motorsport vehicle during competition.

The range of additional units provides the learner with the flexibility to acquire supplementaryknowledge and practical skills to compliment their skills developed through the mandatory motorsport units. The additional units include; the inspection, repair and replacement of high performance tyres, the inspection, repair and replacement of motorcycle tyres and an introduction to low carbon technologies in the automotive industry.

As a result, learners successfully completing this qualification will acquire a significant core knowledge and practical skills which spans the motorsport vehicle maintenance and repair industry, transferable skills required to work within a number of job roles in the motorsport industry and additional knowledge and skills to enhance their employability.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification helps provide entry into employment within the motorsport industry as a motorsport vehicle service technician and also onto an apprenticeship in motorsport vehicle maintenance and repair (as a recognised knowledge qualification within the SEMTAEngineering Manufacture Apprenticeship Framework).

This qualification also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which may allow progression onto some higher level qualifications in motorsport, automotive and engineering related subjects such as the IMIAL Level 3 Diploma in Motorsport Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Who supports this qualification?

This qualification has been developed with input from employers, manufacturers and training providers and is supported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This qualification is also supported by the Institute of the Motor Industry Professional Body and will help gain professional registration to the Institute of the Motor Industry at affiliate membership grade (AffIMI)
