NOTICE OF VACANCY

POSITION: Visiting Assistant Professor or Visiting Instructor of Music Education; Secondary Choral Music Education, with possibility of renewal.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

QUALIFICATIONS: One advanced degree in music education (M.M.E., D.M.E, or Ph.D.) is required. Preference given to candidates who hold the doctorate in music education.

Doctorate in music completed by August 1, 2014. An appointment without the doctorate will be at the instructor level.

Evidence of successful full-time teaching experience in a secondary public school choral music program. Preference given to candidates who have also had successful experience teaching in an elementary general music program and/or who have had university teaching experience in music education.

Successful experience in conducting a choral ensemble

Evidence of scholarly activity and promise of distinction in the field

Preference may be given to candidates skilled in the use of various music technologies, particularly as applied to the Illinois State Board of Education Professional Teaching Standards, or comparable state-mandated standards, and the development of state-mandated Teacher Performance Assessment events (TPA).

A commitment to working with colleagues in the School of Music and across the University in a liberal arts environment

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach Secondary School Vocal Music, Elementary School Music, Practicum in Music Education, team-teach Student Teaching in Music Seminar, direct the University Choir, supervise student teachers, supervise field observation hours, and possibly teach fundamentals of conducting and/or a course in a special area of expertise not cited above.

Maintain an active program of appropriate research activities. Serve on committees and perform other services for the University. Willingness to provide leadership with curriculum development. Assist in the recruitment and retention of music students. Assist with the administrative duties of the music education department and the advising of an active student chapter of NAfME.

APPOINTMENT: Will begin August 1, 2014

SCHOOL OF MUSIC: The School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (since 1930) and offers the Bachelor of Music degrees in Composition, Education, and Performance; the Bachelor of Arts in Music; and an arts management minor, which is offered in cooperation with the Department of Business Administration. The School of Music has a full-time faculty of 21 and a part-time faculty of 34 who teach approximately 175 majors.
