THE WELLNESS MARKET IN ITALY

An annual turnover of over 21 billion euros, involving more than 30,000 enterprises

Rimini, 7th May 2013 - The wellness market in Italy has an estimated annual turnover of more than 21 billion euros, with over 30,000 enterprises (wellness centres, body and beauty care facilities and fitness centres) employing over 70,000 staff in various roles.

It must also be considered thatthere are 3,773 hospitality facilities in spa locations alone, with 148,918 beds (3.2% of the total number of beds in accommodation facilities in Italy) and a total of around 15 million tourists per year.

Among the various types of centres, first in the ranking are the 21,000 beauty parlours, which represent approximately 70% of the sector’s enterprises; then come 4,200 hotels and farmhouse holiday venues, 2,500 thermal spas and facilities for physical wellness, with approximately 7,000 swimming pools and fitness centres, as well as approximately 500 suitably equipped bathing establishments.

The world’s largest number of users and wellness centres is in the United States, followed by Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain.

In Italy, Lombardy is the region with the highest number of enterprises dedicated to body care, with 36.1% of the total.In particular, almost one wellness centre out of five (18.3%) among those in business in Italy is located the province of Milan.

Approximately 40 million Italians practice sports activity more or less regularly.More specifically, as far as the wellness sector is concerned, 23% of Italy’s population attends a fitness centre regularly and 8.7% body care facilities, while almost 11 million Italians spend or state that they are willing to spend up to 1,200 euros per year for products and services for their physical wellness.

56% of Italian gym and fitness wellness centre clients live in the north, 25% in the centre and 19% in the south.In particular, the first places go to Lombardy (19%), Veneto (11%), Emilia Romagna and Latium (both with 10%) and Tuscany (8%); Campania (6%), Apulia and Sicily (both with 4%) stand out in the south.

As far as age groups are concerned, the largest (32%) is between 18 and 25, then 27% are between 26-35 years of age, 21% between 36 and 45, 14% between 46 and 55, and 6% in the remaining group (56-65).41% of gym and wellness centre clients are single, 54% married or cohabitant and 5% divorced/separated.

In spite of the economic crisis, the sector’s enterprises are “holding steady”.

This is thanks to the fact that the services offered can be diversifies extremely rapidly and an increasing number of multi-function centres are available, and the fact that Italians’ interest has increased in wellness in general and physical form in particular.
