VI.  Review of the Budget

Crystal Guffey

I’m passing around the budgets. Again, if you have any questions or changes jot them down in the margins. Also, if there is anything specific in you want to talk to me about clarify, ask me during my report! But even if you do that, still write me a little note I can reference.

I’m also passing around a sheet I would like you to fill out if you are having an event. Since I haven’t gotten any emails about your event details, I thought this might be the only way to get you guys to keep Mary and I informed! Fill out this form if you are having ANY event. Even if it’s a movie on the Yard that’s free and there are no other details, WRITE IT DOWN. I expect to see every event that is planned on this paper! I will pass it around every week.

VII.  Report of the SGA Executive

Report of the Legislative Vice President, Brock McMorran

A few quick I want to bring you all up to speed on:

1.)  For those of you who have may have not heard, Kristin Sanfilippo was appointed as the Chair of the Association Affairs Committee on Senate. We had two Senators apply and Seth and I spent about 3.5 hours discussing the merits of each before we finally came to a conclusion. This was a very difficult choice, but with Seth’s guidance I am sure the transition with go smoothly. If you see Kristin, please congratulate her.

2.)  With Kristin moving into Association Affairs, Needom (one of our new Senators) finally has a new and permanent home on Student Life.

3.)  Last piece of Senate information; please be sure to vote in the First-year elections! Polls opened at 8 this morning and will close at 4 tomorrow evening. All you need to do is log onto myXU and go to the Student Services tab.

4.)  This past week I met with Adrian Schiess, the Executive Director of Student Academic Support Services (SASS), to discuss options for The Student Emergency Fund. As this was our first meeting, we did not come to a conclusion on what should be done, but rather left with visions and goals for the near future.

5.)  So, I wanted to ask you all if you have noticed anything different in the office. Have you? Well as part of our commitment to sustainability, Ryan and I went around and removed the center bulb from each light fixture. This cuts our lighting costs and consumption by 33%!

6.)  I have been in contact with Nia Williams, the SDOD, discussing the goals and visions of her position. Nia has built the goals with Cherly Nunez, who is the Assistant to the President for Diversity and Equity, and will be at this meeting next week to bring you all up to speed.

7.)  State of the University Address- Primary Institutional Goals

8.)  Lastly, I will admit that I was proven wrong this past Saturday…. Only partially though. Though there were more than 15 SGAers (only two SACers) who attended Community Action Day, not all of them were at Pregnancy Center East. Having said that, I know four of you were at GLSEN and a few of you were canvassing for the concert, so I am still willing to provide you with some food. I will coordinate with whoever is bringing snacks next week to bring you all something excellent.

Will there be more information about emergency fund? Something I picked up from Ricardo, address small financial needs for student.

Report of the President, Ryan Alleman

To begin, thanks to everyone for being flexible with pictures today. Thank you, as well, to those of you that attended Community Action Day on Saturday. SGA was well represented so thank you for going above and beyond to help out.

A quick reminder about two upcoming events: the Teamworx Leadership Summit is scheduled for this coming Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Thus far, there have not been a tremendous number of SGA members who have registered to attend. We’d really like to see strong attendance from SGA at this event, so please consider taking advantage of this opportunity for professional development. Next week, SGA is also cosponsoring the Touching History exhibit which will occur on Tuesday 10/4. Lydia will go into more detail about that event in her report.

I wanted to also inform all of you about some exciting developments in Campus Safety. First, I have a meeting set with Dan Schloemer to discuss ways that SGA and Campus Safety can collaborate. Specifically, we are thinking of that Safety Communications Team. Additionally, for Fiscal Year 2012, the University has a 2 million dollar operating surplus. By board mandate, half of that surplus is required to go to the reserves, but last week it was announced that 300,000 of that surplus will be allocated to Safety Initiatives. These initiatives should help to complete the work of last years Safety Team, by ensuring the implementation of more campus lighting, emergency phones, all-card access, and video monitoring, so good news!

Finally, I had the opportunity to present to the Board of Trustees Student Life Committee and at Founders Day. I think that both of those events went very well.

Report of the Administrative Vice President, Lydia Gerlach

Thanks, Katie for the cupcakes and cookies! Next week's snacks are from LeeAnn. Here’s a project update:

1.  Sarah Niemoeller
Look out for an awesome display for the event that is set up downstairs… stop by and check it out the event will take place on october 4th at 7pm in clc 412. Be sure to stop by and check it out. It's really cool-- it's interactive and has barbed wire! Also, there are 2 spaces available to have breakfast with the speaker on the following morning at 8:30 in clocktower. Let me know if you’re interested. Pass a note or something.

2.  LGBTQ position
GLSEN was great this weekend. We had about 6 SGA representatives! There was a lot of good information that we can definitely apply to the LTSI position. On that note, I met with Dr. Steve Yandell Monday, the advisor of XU Alliance. He's in full support. The LTSI position is moving along nicely. I hope to have all of the ends tied by the end of October.

3.  Lawyer Referral

Brief description: Chris kneflin will be available to students to give them information and answer questions regarding leases and other legal issues. Note that he will not represent students. He will be available to students on 10/6, 10/10, 10/20 from 6-9 pm. There will be 4 more sessions in the Spring. Something to help jumpstart this resource will be the forum on 10/3 @7-8pm. Somewhat of a panel discussion; there will be a landlord attending (Erik Zimmerman), the lawyer (Chris Kneflin), and a Norwood police officer and a Xavier police officer. Topics of conversation will revolve around leases, landlord expectations, Xavier police jurisdiction, and last but not least (and most likely the center of the majority of the discussion) Norwood police foot patrolling on the weekends. This is going to be an interesting group of topics to discuss that really will shed some light on so many issues which affect a ton of students (those already living off campus, those thinking about going off campus next year, and even anyone who goes to parties in the surrounding neighborhood on the weekends). Tell your friends, get them talking about these issues, and if you can, come to the forum. It's really relevant.

4.  Elections TODAY

Don’t forget to vote today and tomorrow!!

How many open senate seats? 4

Did you know you spoke of 2 events that you should list those things on the event details sheet I sent around?

Very excited for Sarah Niemoeller event, hope everyone goes well.

IX.  Report of Advisor, Dustin Lewis

For your Senate Minute, I'd like to start by sharing with you the NJSLC Bid written by Meghan Savercool, Joe Colak, Nick Albin and Ryan Martin. They spent a lot of time this past weekend writing the bid and editing the materials and will be submitting it this Friday after they get the remaining letters of support from Dr. Simons and Fr. Graham.

Other updates from the Senate Meeting: Needom Mitchell is working on a project to replace the colored bulb on the Gallagher Clocktower with a blue light that will shine at night after Xavier wins a game. Kristin Sanfilippo is the new Association Affairs Chair - congrats to Kristin! Finally, Community Affairs shared that they are interested in developing a potential series of Community Days this spring, inviting members of the community on to campus to interact and network with Xavier students.

Again, I want to thank the SAC members that attended the GLSEN Conference with Lydia and I. I think that we all learned a few new things and got some decent takeaways from the conference. One session I attended that I'd like to share with you was on Hate Crimes, Crimes and Bias Incidents. The presenter explained the difference between the two including the misperceptions of what is legally considered a Hate Crime in the state of Ohio - which interestingly does not include Sexual Orientation, Gender or Disability.

SAC interviews are going well and we look forward to presenting you with your new 7 members next week on Monday at 5pm, following the Senate Meeting.

One final note, I'd like to ask the Committee Chairs to schedule 30 minutes with me over the next week so that we can catch up on your particular committees and events. Please feel free to write in a time that works for you on my calendar - posted on my door.

NJSLC- did you encourage to bring here? A mix of both. General interest from students who attended conference.

Where is it held this year? Boston, Holy Cross.

NACA nominations due at certain time? Friday at noon. Include promo from last year. Will have edits next week. Catch up after meeting for details.

X.  Report of the SGA Resource Assistant, Crystal Guffey

I’m going to be ordering a few office supplies at the end of this week. If there is anything you think we are missing or anything you need let me know before Friday.

Just another reminder, reports are due 24 hours after the SAC meeting ends. I am going to start emailing the minutes out promptly Thursday around 6pm. I’ve been adding late reports to the minutes after they have been dispersed. From now on if you haven’t sent your report to me by then, it won’t be included. If your report does not make the 24 hour deadline, you must table the minutes at the next meeting; once approved no changes will be made. Also, when I send you the minutes, I usually copy Senate, Leah, Luther, Cathleen, and a few other important people. I’m going to start sending them approved minutes only. I’m not bothered by making changes or slipping things in late, but I really think you should follow your own system.

Before I get here in the morning our Cristo Rey student cleans up the office. They are only responsible for wiping down tables, putting chairs in the right place, fixing pillow, stuff like that. They are now starting to give me a report of everything they come across or have to clean up. The office has been pretty tidy lately, so on behave of Erika, Maria, Dominesha, and Darrion, thank you.

I want to remind everyone that instructions for filling out financial forms are posted on the wall next to my desk. I haven’t seen many people utilizing them. I promise they are helpful, everything I can explain verbally is written on that sheet and more. But still feel free to come to me with any questions. They are also on our website and bookmarked on OrgSync as well.

I sent out an email requesting that you drop a flyer off with Mary and me so we can hang those on our door. You actually need to drop both flyers off with Mary as the Cristo Rey students hang them every morning. Remember that many students come to our door or our office to find out what’s going on, what events they might want to participate in, or just in need of specific information. Mary and me are one of your best resource of communication! Filling out the spreadsheet I passed around earlier will help us keep track of your event details. Please make sure your info is on it before you start advertising! If you have any updates throughout the week you can stop by and make changes.
