It was discussed last year whether to have a home and away type fixture for Volleyball. Also discussed was whether we go back to all Senior A and B matches at the same venue for the ‘atmosphere’. As it turns out we have a combination of both this year as school individual requests played a big part in how the draw was formed, ie some schools wanted all of their senior matches at one venue and others wanted all their teams at the one venue. As it turns out schools will generally have 2 venues maximum per week, but on occasions just the one venue (dependant on how many teams entered).

UMPIRES

As in the past the first named team is to provide the umpire for each match. I have tried my utmost to share this around. Each team has to provide an umpire 3 out of their 6 games. Some are lucky enough to only have 2 of the 6 where they need to provide the umpire.

OVERALL DRAW INFO

  • There are 27 matches required each week, and we have exactly 27 time slots available if we stick to only 3 venues total per week.
  • As requested, all matches now appear on the same grid (ie the 3 venues per week are all listed together)

Senior A and B Grade

  • Matches no longer necessarily played at a central venue, but these matches put together (for atmosphere) where possible.
  • Matches to be played at 8.00am, 9:00am and 10.00am.
  • AllSenior A and B matches in Term 1 count towards the shield.
  • With 7 teams entered in A grade & 7 in B both would have had a bye in their draw. Therefore I have matched up those 2 teams to play each other. The way the draw worked, this is generally same school match ups. Therefore that school can determine whether to play or not.
  • Each week there is a school who has a 1 hour break between their 2 matches. This was unavoidable. I have shared this around.

Middle A and B matches

  • Matches to be played at 8:00am, 9:00am and 10:00am.
  • Time slots have been kept consistent where possible. This way, students and staff always know what time they will be on. With such an large number of C,D teams there are not enough 10:00am time slots available, so they have occasional 8.00 and 9.00 matches.
  • Matches to be spread over the 3 venues per week (the hosts have been rotated dependant on availability etc.)
  • Schools are only at a maximum of TWO venues per week total

C and D matches

  • Matches have been allocated around the remainder of the matches to ensure schools are only at 2 total volleyball venues per week, and are at the minimum possible number of timeslots.
  • As a result of the above there are a few double up matches across the term.
  • In the middle grade it was increasingly difficult to keep all schools at only the one venue. This resulted in a couple of same school match ups. The only way to avoid this would be to have another venue added to your list for the week. I didn’t think this was ideal.

IGSSA Volleyball Rules appear at the end of this document. These are the same as those used in previous years

  1. A grade matches will be for 60 minutes or the best of five sets, whichever

comes first.

B, C and D Grade matches will be for 50 minutes or the best of five sets.

The fifth set is complete when one team reaches 25 points with an advantage of 2 points or more. If, at full-time, a set is not complete, the score will count only if one team has 16 or more points and leads by a minimum of 2 points.

  1. A team should have a maximum of nine players.

a)Continuous rotation is allowable.

b)If substitutions are used, they should be made up according to the rules of volleyball.

-six only substitutions per set.

-A player may only be substituted to the same position in the rotation.

c)C grade teams should consist predominantly of Middle School students

  1. A team may play with a minimum of five players.

a) When it is the turn of the sixth player (or the hole) to serve, it is an automatic loss of service.

There will be no change in the score.

b) If a team has less than five players, the match should be forfeited, but an attempt to play a scratch match should be made.

  1. A player may not play for more than one team on any one Saturday.

-this includes a player from a lower grade filling in for a higher grade and vice-versa.

-If a school has entered two or more teams in any grade, no player may play for more than one team in that grade on any one Saturday.

  1. Score sheets must be signed by the referee upon completion of the match.
  1. There will be a maximum of two minutes between sets.

The referee is responsible for timing the break and should indicate to both teams when there is thirty seconds left.

  1. There will be no time-outs in the last five minutes of a game.
  1. Results will be kept for all matches and distributed at the end of each term.

-Scores will be calculated in sets only – no consideration for points scored will be given.

-Two points will be awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss.

-Only matches between A1 teams will count for A grade shield, as not all teams enter A2 or more teams. The same counts for B grade (only B1 matches count)

  1. Teams programmed in the first timeslot in the gym are responsible for

setting up poles and nets and teams in the final timeslot in the gym are responsible for dismantling equipment.

  1. In general, all new rules of volleyball will be implemented.

Exception for C GRADE ONLY:

Due to skill level and the difficulties of playing outside, in C Grade only, players will be allowed a further attempt to serve, if they let the ball drop to the ground, untouched, in their service action.
