Job Description

Under the supervision of the IFNA Health Services Coordinator the IFNA Mental Wellness Coordinator is responsible for meeting the following program objectives and outcomes in the IFNA member First Nations, in partnership with existing First Nation structures:

  2. Improveaccesstomentalwellnessservicesandsupportsandcreatelinkageswithnewandexistingservicesthatareresponsivetotheneedsoftheindividualclients,familiesandcommunities.
  3. Providecomprehensive,client-centred,culturally appropriate,community-basedmentalwellnessservicesand programsthatmeettheidentifiedneedsoftheclients,familiesandcommunities,inthecontextoftheircommunities.
  4. Seektobalancetheapplicationofprofessional,clinicalpracticeswiththetraditionalcultureandvaluesasthefoundation.
  5. Improveaccesstomentalwellnessservicesbyidentificationandadvocacyforongoingandpotentialunmetneedsandgapsinmentalwellnessservices.
  6. Strengthenpartnershipsandlinkageswithcommunityserviceandsecondlevelsupportswhichwillhaveimpactcommunity-relateddeterminantsofhealthandmentalwellnessandwillimprovetreatmentoutcomes,continuityofcare,andservicecoordination.
  7. Increasecapacityforemergencyresponses tosocial crisiswithincommunities.
  8. Providerapidresponse servicesthrough acrisistoassistFristNationstoaddresscomplexandevolvingchallengesthatrequirestimelyand flexibletreatmentresponses.
  9. Strengthencoordinationbetweeninter-jurisdictionalorganizationstoprovideeffectiveandrapidresponsetocommunitiesincrisis.

2.ExpectedOutcomes

a.Provideafullrangeofmentalwellnessservicesincludingdirectclinicalservices,culturalsupportsandcarecoordination.Directservicescouldinclude: trauma-informedcare,landbasedhealingandtreatment,prevention,crisisresponse, earlyinterventionandscreening, aftercare,assessmentandintake,referrals,culturalcounselling,clinical services,elderadvisoryservice,mentalhealthinterventioncounselling, communityoutreach, groupcircles,culturalceremonies,training,andindividualsupport.

b.Addresscommunitycrisisprevention,throughearlyintervention.

c.Addresstheneedsofhigh-riskindividualswithcomplexmentalhealthissuesbyprovidingcoordinated,multi­disciplinarymentalhealthsupportsandinterventions.

d.Providepre-crisissurveillancetopreventand/orreducethelevelofimpendingcrisisandtoensureHealthDirectors,ChiefsandCouncilsaswellaslocalandregionalpartnersareinformedandpreparedtoproviderequiredresponse.

e.Engageandbepartofthebroadernetworkofsupportsthatincludetreatmentcenters,mentalhealthcrisisinterventionteamsandothercommunitybasedservicesaswellaslinkwithfederalandprovincialgovernmentstofacilitatecarecoordinationandimproveaccesstoculturallyappropriatequalitycare.

f.MobilizebasedonrequestsfromFirstNationcommunitiesaffectedbycrisis.

g.Provideculturallyappropriate,directcrisisresponseservices.Directservicescouldinclude:surge capacity,mobilizationofkeypartners;coordination;crisisinterventionandprovisionof counsellingservices;stabilizationandde­escalationofriskforcommunitiesandindividuals;developmentand/orharmonizationofcrisisprotocols;diversionofpersonsfromhospitaladmissionandthecriminaljusticesystem;andtrainingincriticalresponseandtraumainformedcare.

h.Provideindirect,culturallyappropriate,crisisresponsesupport.Indirectsupportcouldinclude:developingcapacityofindividualsandcommunitiestorespondtoandmanagecrisis;thedevelopmentofcrisisresponseplans,assistingcommunityMentalWellnessTeams,identificationandtrainingofcommunitybasedteammembers; identificationandtrainingofnaturalhelpers/volunteerswithincommunities.

i.Developcriteriaforcrisisinterventionanddevelopcrisisprotocolplansincollaborationwithotherresponsibleagencies(regional, PTOs, provincialhealthservices/emergencyresponse,HealthCanada(NIHB),TribalCouncils.,localpolice).

  1. The coordinator will supervise the IFNA community-based workers to meet the program objectives and outcomes.
  1. The coordinator will identify training needs for the community-based workers and facilitate the delivery of training
  1. The coordinator is responsible for monitoring and adhering to the program budget..
  1. The coordinator is responsible for all reporting requirements of the program.
  1. Other duties, as assigned and pertinent to the program.

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary education and experience in an area of mental health
  • Understanding of the mental health issues in First Nations
  • Ability to travel extensively
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
