AMENDED LETTER FOR SECONDARY O/S

Dear Parent/Carer

OVERSUBSCRIPTION OF S1 ROSSHALL ACADEMY – AUGUST 2018

I write to inform you that unfortunately the number of catchment children due to transition from Primary 7 to S1 at Rosshall Academy, commencing August 2018, is greater than thenumber of places available. In such cases when the numbers are oversubscribed, Glasgow City Council require to apply the placing request criteria to allocate places in the following order:

  • A child/young person who has a medical condition and requires facilities or support available only in the requested school. All applications seeking to receive recognition under this category should be supported by documentary evidence from your family doctor and a local health practitioner. Please note: All medical documentation should be submitted with the attached form.
  • In relation only to denominational schools, those children whose parents/carers can demonstrate an affinity with the religious ethos of the school. All applications seeking to receive recognition under this category should be supported by documentary evidence, for example a baptismal certificate from the Roman Catholic Church or a supporting letter. All documentary evidence should be submitted with the attached form.
  • The child/young person has a sibling already in the chosen school and a brother or sister will be attending the same school for the session the application is being made. Please provide details of sibling(s) on the attached form when returning.
  • The child is from a single adult household and for example, the proximity of a school to the parent’s/carer’s place of work would be advantageous for the care and well-being of the child or young person. You may be asked to support this by suitable documentation.
  • Ranked by distance between your home and school by a safe walking route (This criteria will be used when all of the above have been exhausted). Those living closest to school ranking highest.
  • The suitability of particular teaching methods to the child/young person’s needs or the availability of subjects which he/she was previously studying

In order to assist us in applying the criteria for the allocation of spaces for Rosshall Academyplease complete Section Aof the attached form indicating which of the above criteria applies to your application and enclose copies of any supporting documentation. If there are no supporting criteria indicated by you, your application for Rosshall Academy will be considered after applicants who have supplied the criteria information.

If following the above process you are unsuccessful in gaining a place at Rosshall Academy, a place will be allocated to your child in either Govan High School or St Paul’s Secondary School. Glasgow City Council will endeavour to accommodate your first choice whenever possible. You will be informed of your child’s placement by no later than the second week inFebruary 2018.

The completed form should be emailed/posted to the address on the attached form no later than 22 December 2017. It is important to note that if no response is made by you within the timeframe for decisions then your child will be placed at the next local school where spaces are available.

Should the distance from home to school be over the required qualifying distance of 2.2 miles you will be entitled to apply for free school transport. Parents/carers should be aware that free transport is only granted until such times as a space becomes available atyour catchment school. If you decide to request that your son/daughter remains at the chosen school, free transport will likely be withdrawn.

Please note that families have the right to make a placing request to any school as defined in the Education (Scotland) Act 1980. The detailed advice on placing requests should be read thoroughly. The Online Placing Request application can be accessed by visiting Glasgow City Council’s webpage via or from the Customer Business Support Team: 0141 287 8000.

Placing requests must be submitted by the 15 Marchprior to when the child/young person is due to start P1 and will be processed by the last day of April. Placing requests which are submitted after this time, by law, can take up to eight weeks to be processed, however all attempts would be made to minimise this.

I trust this information is useful in relation to your child starting school in August 2018.

Yours sincerely

Maureen McKenna
