Description

Thegoal of this activity plan is to highlight mostof the widevarietyoftools and equipment usedinmetalshops.Theplanincludes alesson/demonstrationwith a PowerPoint presentation onallofthetools,andthestudentwillcompletetoolandmachineidentificationactivities.Thefocusoftheactivity is broad,anditwillbe applicableinthe majority ofschool sites.

LessonObjectives

The student willbeableto:

•Identify the tools and equipment in their own schoolmetal shop

•Explainthefunctionof thetoolsand equipment

•Discuss safety implications ofeachtool/machine

•Identify one or moreoperation thatis possiblewith eachmachine/tool

•Recognizethattools/machines should alwaysbe used only fortheirintended purpose

Assumptions

•Students may nothavehad prior metal shopprocedural andsafetytraining

•Students havenotseenall of themachines/toolsinthe shopunderoperation

Terminology

Hand/manualtool: atoolthat is operatedcompletelybyhuman power usinghands orfeet.

Portablepowertool:a handheld, portable tooloperatedthroughtheuseofelectricity, air,orhydraulics.

Stationarymachine: alargemachinethatis operatedwithelectricity, air,orhydraulics,generallysecuredtothe floor or a workbench.

Any other terminologyrelated to thetools being introducedwill betaught to the studentsas it isrequired duringthe lesson.

Facilities

Secondaryschool metal shop, orequivalentlyequipped technology educationshop

Studentsaregenerallyunawareofthedangersinhandling some toolsforthefirsttime,especially air- or electrically-operated tools. Therefore adequate space is aprimaryconcern forsafety.

Equipment/Machinery

All shop equipment/tools should be demonstratedin operation.

Adataprojector willberequiredfor the PowerPoint presentations.

Tools

A widevarietyof toolswillbe introducedthat are usedin themetal/machine shop. The namesandfunctionsofthesetoolswill be identifiedthroughtheactivitiesintheplan.

Materials

Handouts oftooldescriptionsandimageswithmost commonnamesareattached.
