Course Number: RNSG1161

Course Title: Clinical I – Nursing – Registered Nurse Training

Course Description: A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Course focuses on understanding and application of the nursing process, therapeutic communication, the development of critical thinking, patient/client advocacy, and safety to give comprehensive, quality patient-centered care using evidence based outcomes to culturally and socially diverse patient/client systems and documentation of care. Development of teaching/learning plans to address patient/client healthcare needs. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to promote, maintain and restore optimal health status of patient/client systems. Major Requirement: AAS – Nursing (RN).

Prerequisite: Admission to the AAS – Nursing (RN) Program

Corequisites: RNSG 1125, RNSG 1128, RNSG 1216 and RNSG 1430, or consent of Program Director

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Apply Neuman’s Systems Model theory, fundamental nursing concepts, and basic competentnursing skills for culturally and socially diverse patients/clients involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures in medical/surgical clinical settings.
  2. Identifyregulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the profession of nursing.
  3. Discuss legal and ethical behavior, patient/client safety advocacy and interpersonal and teamwork skills associated with the roles/competencies of the professional nurse as a member of the health care team in the medical/surgical clinical setting.
  4. Establish appropriate communication/documentation skills using nursing terminology in the clinical setting.
  5. Begin to utilize evidenced-based nursing process to determine basic needs and care for one to two patient/client systems in a medical/surgical clinical setting.
  6. Apply basic principles of decision making and clinicalreasoning utilized in the nursing process when caring for one to two patient/client systems in a medical/surgical clinical setting.
  7. Demonstrate application of patient-centered, therapeutic communication techniques in a medical/surgical clinical setting to establish a caring, safe environment.
  8. Demonstrate personal accountability and responsibility for providing safe,patient-centered, fundamental nursing care for one to two patient/client systems in a medical/surgical clinical setting.
  9. Utilize critical thinking and basic clinicalreasoning when providing safe,basic nursing care for one totwo patient/client systems in a medical/surgical clinical setting.
  10. Identify health related teaching/learning needs/problems and develop basic teaching/learning plans forpatient/client systems across the lifespan in a variety of settings.
