Submission:
1. Submit a report as an attachment to this Application Form, at least 10 but not to exceed 25 pages in length (strictly enforced), in Microsoft Word or PDF (PDF is preferred) to Mark Halpin, Zucker Planning and Operation Committee Chair and in copy to Peter Magyar, CMD Chair .
2. Submission deadline is 15 March 2015.
Guidelines
Scope:
To recognize the accomplishments of three individual students and three student teams and the students’ associated engineering department. It is for students enrolled in a non post-graduate academic engineering program, or its equivalent, who receive the highest rankings and approvals of a submitted undergraduate engineering design project within the scope of IEEE Industry Applications Society (http://ias.ieee.org/) .
Contest Categories:
Because of the wide variety of education systems in engineering, the IEEE IAS Myron Zucker Undergraduate Student Design Contest has recently been expanded to include two separate categories: individual design contest and team design contest.
Eligibility:
The design project must fall within the scope of the IEEE Industry Applications Society. Most engineering senior level or undergraduate design projects of undergraduate and graduate students before MSc degree qualify. At least one student involved in the design project must be a member of the IEEE, the design project must fall within the scope of IEEE Industry Applications Society and the students must have received academic credit for the project work.
The intention of the contest is to have the work carried out by students in some sort of academic environment. Normally this is proven by the fact that the students receive some type of “credit” or “grade” for their participation. However, if a member of the academic staff is willing to certify that the work was carried out by a student team in an academic (non-professional) environment, then that it is acceptable and within the intentions of the contest in general.
Basis for judging:
The IAS CMD Zucker Planning and Operation Committee will determine award selection based upon:
i. the extent to which the solution of the design problem demonstrates the practical application of engineering fundamentals and engineering judgment; or the quality of research and significance of the contributions demonstrated in the thesis;
ii. the quality of the written report presentation;
iii. the extent to which an industrial entity, if any, provides appropriate guidance and access to an applications environment.
iv. the IAS Executive Board will make the final approval based upon the recommendations/rankings of the CMD Zucker Planning and Operation Committee.
Cash Honoraria for Each Category:
· 1st Prize: $800 for students and IEEE IAS certificate
$500 for student’s academic department and IEEE IAS certificate
· 2nd Prize: $600 for students and IEEE IAS certificate
$400 for student’s academic department and IEEE IAS certificate
· 3rd Prize: $400 for students and IEEE IAS certificate
$300 for student’s academic department and IEEE IAS certificate
· The IAS will also grant one year free IAS membership to each award winner
All cash honoraria will be divided equally among team members. In addition to the cash honorarium, the IAS will reimburse actual travel expenses not to exceed $2,000 per award for the award winners to attend the 52nd IAS Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, OH, USA, 1-5 October 2017. Award winners will have the opportunity to present their projects at the Student Technical and/or Poster Session of the IAS Annual Meeting 2016. In case of the travel allowance doesn´t cover the travel expenses of the team members they may apply for AMTGP grant.
