MINUTES OF 79TH IAPM KERALA CHAPTER MEETING HELD AT AMALAINSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES , THRISSUR, ON 12/08/2017

The inaugural function started at 8:45AM with a prayer. The welcome address was given by Dr Joy Augustine, Professor and HOD of Pathology, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur. Dr Krishna Balachandran Nair, Chairperson, IAPM Kerala Chapter, delivered the Presidential address. The Inaugural address was delivered by Rev. Fr. Francis Kurissery CMI, Director, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur. Dr M R Chandran, Principal, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, and Dr Agnessamma Jacob, Professor, Department of Pathology, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, felicitated the gathering.

The Professor Ramachandran Memorial Gold Medal Examination 2017 Award was presented to Mr. Abhijith Mohan, GMC, Trivandrum, by Dr Krishna Balachandran Nair, Chairperson, IAPM Kerala Chapter.

Dr Lekha K Nair, Associate Professor of Pathology, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur, proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr Lekshmi T P, Radiologist, AIMS Thrissur, and Dr Harikumar Unni, Surgical Oncologist, AIMS Thrissur, delivered the guest lecture on “THE BREAST- BEYOND THE MICROSCOPE”. The session was moderated by Dr Vijayalakshmi Nair, Professor of Pathology, AIMS, Thrissur.

After the tea break, a slide seminar on BREAST PATHOLOGY was conducted by Dr DEEPTHY VIJAYARAGHAVAN, Professor of Pathology, Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur. Fourteen cases were discussed-

Business meeting was conducted at 01:30 PM.

The minutes of the last meeting held at GMC Kozhikode was passed.

The following matters were discussed and decisions were taken.

  1. The By-Laws of the Chapter (modified from the central By-Laws), with suggestions from Prof. Dr. Balaraman Nair, were discussed in detail. The following points came up in the discussion-
  2. The name of the Chapter was selected as “Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists – Kerala Chapter”, or, “IAPM - Kerala Chapter”. A proposal to leave out “and Microbiologists” was made by Dr. Annamma and Dr. Joy, but a final decision was left to a further date in view of documentation difficulties, the Chapter being a body attached to the central IAPM.
  3. The Office of the Chapter was decided as the Address of the Secretary, to be revised and updated whenever the Office-bearers change.
  4. It was decided to revise the designation “Chairperson” of the Chapter to “President”.
  5. Dr Feroze suggested setting up the post of a ‘Vice-President’ of the chapter, who will act in lieu of the President if and when the latter cannot be present.
  6. An Executive Council, comprising the President, past Presidents of the previous three terms, Secretary, immediate past Secretary, the Organising Secretaries of the two Chapter meetings of the current year, and the Vice-President, was constituted.
  7. Membership fee was proposed to be raised to Rs 250, and was passed by the house. A life membership of Rs 5000 was proposed by Dr Annamma.
  8. The Quorum for the Chapter was proposed at 50% by Dr. Joy Augustine, and passed.
  9. The matter of starting an Online Journal (in the model of the Central body) was raised. The terms of the Office of the Editor of such a journal was proposed to be finalized in a later General Body.
  10. It was agreed to appoint an Auditor for the Chapter, subject to approval by the Executive Council.
  1. The next Chapter meeting is to be held at GOVERNMENT MEDICAL COLLEGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM on 10/02/2018.

- Dr Lilarani Vijayaraghavan will be the Organising Secretary.

- The topic for slide seminar was decided as PAEDIATRIC TUMOURS and the moderator will be Dr Geetha Sukumaran, Associate Professor of Pathology, Govt T D Medical College, Alappuzha.

  1. The Prof. Ramachandran Memorial Gold Medal Examination 2018 will be conducted on the second Saturday of January, 2018 (13 January 2018). Colleges wishing to participate were asked to submit the list of candidates (one candidate per ten students in a batch) by December 15, 2017.
  2. Dr Feroze pointed out that the Prof Thangavelu Endowment fund will have to be topped up to Rs 5 lakhs in accordance with the norms in the By-Laws.
  3. It was decided to present certificates to 30 selected e-posters (even if the number displayed at the venue is less than 30 due to organizational constraints), in connection with a proposal made earlier by Dr Sankar.
  4. A modified criteria for evaluation of posters was presented by Dr Jayalakshmy, which was accepted unanimously by the house.
  5. The matter of Endorsement by the Chapter of other Associations / projects was raised by Dr Seethalakshmi. In response, Dr Feroze pointed out that such endorsements would first require the Chapter to set up a committee for the same.
  6. In response to a query received by the Chapter for the presentation of Posters / Papers from students of Universities outside Kerala, it was decided not to permit the same.

Following lunch, the free paper session commenced at 2:15 pm, and was moderated by Dr M C SAVITHRI, Professor, Department of Pathology, Amala Institute of Medical Scieces, Thrissur. The papers were-
