I694/494/94 Interchange Reconstruction

Constructability Review

MnDOT is planning for SP 8286-81 on I694 between 10th Street and TamrackRoad. The project is currently scheduled for a design-bid-build letting in September of 2018. The primary scope of the project consists of:

  • Unbonded concrete overlay on 694 from 10th Street to Tamrack.
  • Provide a 3rd lane southbound and north bound through the I-94 interchange
  • Two new bridges, NB and SB 694 over I94. The bridges will be two span prestressed concrete beam structures.

The project is planned for a two year construction schedule with primary construction on SB 694 in 2019 and NB 694 in 2020. The staging for the project requires a temporary bridge be used in the median of I694 in both the 2019 and 2020 construction seasons to maintain 2 lanes of traffic at all times. MnDOT plans on performing a lateral slide of the existing SB 694 bridge #82831 to the median for use as a temporary bridge.

The Project has an September 2018 letting with a November start date. It is expected that temporary substructures and some permanent substructure work will occur in the winter of 2018 -2019.

Additionally, the new NB and SB 694 bridges will use full depth precast deck panels with Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) joints.

MnDOT is looking for input with regard to:

  • Constructability comments or concerns relating to the use of precast deck panels and UHPC
  • Constructability comments or concerns relating to laterally sliding the existing SB 694 bridge for use as a temporary bridge
  • Substructure options for the temporary bridge including evaluation of cast-in-place pier caps versus precast pier caps.
  • Insight into options for staging, closures, closure durations, and maintenance of traffic
  • Contractor’s thoughts on how A+B bidding could be used effectively on this project to minimize the impacts to the public.
  • Minimizing loop/ramp closures within the interchange

MnDOT requests one-on-one meetings with potential construction contractors to review proposed concepts and provide feedback. The meetings are expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

MnDOT cannot compensate contractors for the one-on-one meetings, or accommodations to and from the meeting. Contractors will not be disqualified from submitting bids for construction if they attend. All minutes and summary of discussions will be posted to the FTP project website after the meetings (names and company titles will not be available for viewing).
