In celebration of Boeing’s 100 years, we asked John Kutz, the grandfather of BEBF, to write the history of Bible Studies at Boeing.

ONE IN A LONG LINE (Part 1)
1916 – 2016 (by John Kutz)

When I first entered the Boeing doors back in September of 1958, I quickly gained the view that Boeing is like a big university. There was always someone who was an expert in any field in which I had a question. In the particulargroup I started in, a staff organization in the Bomarc program under Dr. Montgomery, I found that many of our group of 15 had differing views on the subject of religion. This was both challenging and perplexing. I wondered if man would ever find an answer to the question, “Does God exist?”

What I didn’t realize was God was beginning to call me through my own mind. He used my natural curiosity, and through it I began to seek an answer to the question. About a year-and-a-half later, the Lord revealed Himself to me within the Boeing context. Therefore, I call myself a “Boeing Baby.” God’s grace found me in my sin and unbelief, convicted me of sin, and I responded by seriously repenting. In that serious repentance, Jesus rescued me from sin and death. I had historically known that Jesus had died on the cross, but there it stopped. When He revealed Himself to me, I saw that He is alive. Yes, ALIVE. He is my risen Savior. Only through the years would I began to realize that He is also Lord, but that would be getting ahead of myself in this most personal story.

What I learned shortly after coming to know Him, and better that He knew me, was that there are others who knew Him and are known of Him! This was a great surprise to me, and soon a great blessing in joy. I began to meet with brothers primarily around a drafting table at lunch. Conference rooms were always occupied. In these blessing and joy. I began to meet with brothers primarily around a drafting table at lunch. Conference rooms were always occupied. Through these brothers, and then a sister or two in the Lord, I began to realize the great work that God had going on in Boeing.I had attended a Bible study for a year before I was born again. That study had not meant much to me (things seemed flat)—but following my rebirth, some of these same men were full of light. One or two of these brothers took me under their wing and began to mentor me in the Lord, actually discipling me. What a precious treasure that is – a brother would began to pour his life into a youngling.

As I began to fellowship with Christians more and more, I asked my oldest mentor, Bill, had anyone mentored him in the Boeing? He smiled and said, “John, the line of faith within Boeing people is long —you are one in that long line.” The words hung there for a brief moment as I thought about what he said. “Do you mean, Bill, that there were others before us?” He began to name names which I now wish I had written down, but he took me all the way back to the beginning of Boeing in 1916. He said men and women have been meeting around drafting tables in Boeing since its inception. He named several high executives in past history who were a part of the fellowship. This stirred me deeply—but not deeply enough for me to do anything out of the norm about it!

I had a burning desire to go on a mission to some foreign place and began to pray to that end. One day the Lord spoke to me the following words: “John, your mission field is Boeing, the natives are your colleagues, and their spears and arrows are your colleagues’ tongues. Be Careful, they are just as sharp!” I was stunned, but knew it was the Lord. “Lord, what would you have me do?” I asked. “You’ll learn as you lean upon Me.”

Sometime in the mid-60s, a dear sister—a time keeper carrying a stack of IBM punched cards— accidentally met me in a hall way, and told me her church was playing Moody Science Films: “Would you like to borrow one or two and show them here at Boeing? My heart jumped, “Yes, I will try to do that.” Well, the Lord opened the way for me to dash out to my car at lunch, pick up the 16mm sound film, borrow a Boeing projector, and play the movie (which was always a science topic with about a 5-minute pitch at it conclusion showing this demonstrates God’s love, and actually suggesting a decision for the Lord). At first we may have gotten a small audience of ten, but soon we had to go larger conference rooms.

Someone suggested to me that the use of the internal Boeing PA system was available. Through these PA announcements many more came, and out of these Moody Science films, many Bible studies began to start. Periodically we’d find a different movie series. One of the most outstanding series was by Francis Schaeffer, “HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE?” We had to use the largest Boeing theatre to host over 150 during lunch.

I believe it was out of these responses that a number of us one evening in 1978, decided to hold an after-hours meeting in the Boeing Theater in what we called the main Engineering building to network with others. I believe it was a November evening. Out of that meeting was birthed the preliminary organization to BEBF which we called GOOD NEWS AT WORK It functioned for 22 years until we became an official Boeing club (BEBF) named Boeing Employees Bible Fellowship in 2000.
