My “last straw” moment was shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter’s high school graduation. I thought, “OK, a size 16 should fit,” but to my horror, I could only fit into a size 20. In clothes that big, the choices are limited and I was forced to buy something I didn’t even like, just because it fit.
Being overweight most of my adult life, I always felt self conscious and had very little self-esteem. Wearing a dress I didn’t like to such an important event was enough to make me look for help.
Thankfully, a friend recently started attending Weight Watchers meetings, and I noticed her steady progress. I fear if she had not inspired me, I might never have made it to that first meeting. I was completely convinced that I could lose weight on my own. I certainly didn’t think I needed to pay someone to tell me how to eat. Her success inspired me to give it a try. I joined Weight Watchers meetings and started following the POINTS® Weight-Loss System.
The following are the tips I learned at the meetings which help control my weight:
1. Order a salad before a meal (dressing on the side) and you won’t eat as much of the entrée.
2. Split meals whenever possible, or take half home to enjoy the next day.
3. Have healthy snacks and water in your purse, car and desk at all times.
4. Label every food item in the kitchen and refrigerator with the POINTS value and portion size.
5. Chew gum to satisfy a sweet tooth between meals.
6. When dining out, check the menu online so you can plan your meal and stay on plan.
7. Eat treats like ice cream, pudding or Jell-O with a baby spoon; it gives you more bites to enjoy longer.

(B) A friend of hers told her to exercise every day and she took the advice.
(C) She was advised how to go on a diet in a series of meetings and she followed.
(D) She could do nothing but turn to doctors for help and take some medicine.

The Sheriff of Nottingham sighed. He looked at me sadly. “Willy, I fear there has been another robbery,” he said, “and the King will want to know why.”
I was only a page, but I felt proud when the Sheriff talked to me about his troubles. I unfolded his napkin and asked, “My lord, when did this crime take place?”
“It was yesterday, as the taxes were taken by wagon out of the gates of the city. This thief of the forest took all the money!” Now the Sheriff looked worried. “The King will want his money, whether it has been collected already or not. He may ask everyone to pay their taxes again. Many cannot afford to do that.”
I nodded, trying to look wise and grown-up. “Maybe you could ask the King for mercy, my lord,”I said.
The Sheriff sighed again, though he tried to smile at me. “I could, Willy. I could try. But the King is angry that I have not been able to catch this thief. If only Sherwood Forest were not so large! It is as if he simply disappears in the woods.”
“Some people in town are saying that this thief gives the money back to them,” I told my master.
“I know, Willy, I know. But he does not give back nearly as much as he takes. We have proof of that. This thief grows rich, and the people grow only a little less poor.”
“Still,” I answered, as I served the Sheriff some soup, “the stories have made this thief well-liked. People may hope that he will give them back these taxes, too.”
Now the Sheriff’s face looked stern. “Those taxes belong to our king,” he said. “That is the law. Good people obey the laws. They know that this robber must be stopped. I am sure they do.”
I silently spooned some of the game pie onto a plate. I knew better. The stories were more powerful than my master would admit. The thief from the forest was using these tales to make himself harder to catch. I feared that very few people in town would help my master and his soldiers in the task that lay ahead of them.
