I. Rec Rules 2nd - 6th Grades:

The following rules will apply to the recreational leagues grades 2-6, boys and girls (unless otherwise noted):

a. Game preparations:

i. Prior to the first game of the day, coaches need to set-up scoreboard/time clock controller,scorer’s table, and team chairs.

ii. After last game, coaches are to put away chairs, table, basketballs, scoreboard/timeclock controller, and remove debris from bleachers.

iii. Note that at BEC, there are no chairs to be set-up since the bleachers pull out to sideline; please push bleachers back in after the last game.

iv. Coaches need to provide volunteers to keep the score/time and the scorebook.

b. Parents are responsible for monitoring their children (players and siblings) when they are not participating in basketball activities (game/practice). Children should not be in the hallways. Please enforce thisimportant responsibility with your parents; we risk the loss of the gym usage.

c. Games will consist of four (4) eight-minute quarters with a running clock with the followingexceptions:

i. At about the four minute mark of each quarter, the clock will be stopped to allow “mass”substitutions. This is not a time-out, please make substitutions expeditiously.

ii. The clock will be stopped for foul shots.

iii. The clock will be stopped for called time outs. Two (2) timeouts per half (about 45 to 60 sec) areallowed. Timeouts do not carry over from half to half. One timeout will be awarded in the eventof an overtime situation (5th/6th only).

iv. The clock will be stopped on whistles during the last 2 minutes of the game.

d. Referees:

i. 2nd/3rd/4th grade coaches referee each other’s games.

(i.e., if you coach the 1st game – you ref the 2nd game and vice versa)

ii. Referees (two per game) for the 5th/6th grade games.

iii. In all divisions, the referees have the final say on the court.

e. Defense:

i. Both zone and man-to-man are allowed.

ii. Double-teaming/trapping is not allowed outside of the lane. Referees may issue a single warningfor illegal defense and technical foul shots thereafter.

iii. No full court defense except during last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter for the 5th/6th gradeleagues under the condition that the team is not leading by more than 6 points.

II. Miscellaneous:

a. No jewelry allowed during practice or games.

b. 3-point field goals are allowed.

c. 3-second lane violations are to be enforced (not as often at the lower levels).

d. 5 personal fouls will result in player disqualification.

e. 2nd/3rd/4th grade leagues: crossing the foul line after free throw is allowable; not allowed in the 5th/6th gradeleagues.

f. Goal heights to be used:

i. 2nd/3rd/4th girls – 8 feet

ii. 5th/6th girls – 10 feet

iii. 2nd/3rd/4th boys – 8.5 feet

iv. 5th/6th grade boys – 10 feet

g. Overtime (5th/6th grade leagues only):

i. 2-min period (full court defense allowed; clock stopped on whistles).

ii. If the game is still tied at the end of the overtime period, a sudden-death overtime period(maximum of 2 minutes) will be played.

iii. If no team scores during sudden death, the game will end in a tie.

h. Ball size – all recreation programs are using the 28.5” ball

i. Practices – scrimmages are allowed if agreeable to both coaches

j. For all recreation league games, record final score in scorebook; additionally, send all scores to nd .

k. Jump ball to start game and overtime periods; alternate possession thereafter.
