The brothers didn’t know what to do. One panicked and jumped out of the window. Another found his way to a door and got out OK. Later the firefighters discovered the third boy by a bedroom window. He had died of

smoke inhalation. “Didn’t anyone try to get him out?” asked one of their neighbors. And the two brothers gave

the same answer, “We thought SOMEBODY else would help!”

P.4/6

Do you often rely upon a mysterious “they” you refer to as SOMEBODY ELSE? When there was an important job to be done, many of us have the tendency to let somebody else do it. Everybody thinks somebody would do it, but nobody does. More often than not it ends up that everybody blames somebody when nobody did what anybody could have done.

Each of us is responsible for his or her own actions. We are also responsible for those times we do nothing in the face of need. Life is a decision-making process. Not to decide is a cop-out. Instead of saying, “I need somebody else to get me started,” motivate yourself by saying, “I will start it by myself !” It is important for each of us to be that SOMEBODY!

(C) To tempt us to gain more insight into human nature.

(D) To convince us that fables can teach us a lot.

(B)Horses have been viewed by Native Americans as companions and animals to be cared for. The horse can mean a messenger, teacher, or guide to them. However, before they discovered the value of the horses, they had lived for thousands of years without their favorite animal. Instead, they used dogs in everyday life. Dogs are loyal and good hunters.

When Native Americans first saw horses, they described them as giant dogs. They didn’t think horses could be valuable. After all, horses ate the same grass as the sheep. And it was the sheep, not horses, which could provide meat and wool.

Anyway, as the native people went hunting in the mountains, they discovered horses lived well in the

snow-covered region. They soon saw how to use the horses to make life easier. A horse can carry 200 pounds

P.5/6

on its back and travel more than 20 miles a day. Besides, horses are relatively peaceful among themselves. Once tamed, horses are more dependable, easier to handle, and require less care than dogs.

On horseback, buffalo could be chased and hunted with great speed, increasing a hunter’s chance of success. Hunting territories expanded with the increasing ability to track and chase. They could finally successfully hunt the buffalo. There is no doubt that the horse has brought dramatic changes to Native Americans.

“Good! Good!” said all the other mice, and one ran to get the bell.
