I.LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:

Sufficient oral and reading comprehension of Spanish to assimilate lectures and reading assignments, engage in class discussion, take quizzes, mid-term, and final, and write an essay. Students are expected to own an all Spanish as well as a Spanish-English dictionary

II.ASSIGNMENTS:

B.Quizzes on readings and lectures.

C. Short paper on Sor Juana’s Los empeños de una casa. Length: 5-6 typewritten pages (excluding endnotes).

DUE DATES FOR STAGES OF SHORT PAPER

First thorough Reading of entire play completed for quiz January 27.

Preliminary notes (from at least FOUR reference works and personal interpretations) by February 5

Preliminary outline by February 12.

FINAL notes (from at least FOUR reference works AND personal interpretations), by February 19

FINAL outline and rough draft by February 24

CRITIQUE of classmates draft Wednesday, February 26

ALL handwritten preliminary work, final outline, and finished paperwill be due no later than Monday, March 10 , 2:00 p. m.

GRADE ON THE PAPER will depend on student's meeting all of the above deadlines, besides demonstrating extent and depth of research and personal insight in notes (ALL hand-written/typed preliminary work, comments on all printed material consulted) plus effective organization of final draft.

Plagiarism will result in an automatic F and can lead to suspension from the University.

III. FINAL GRADE

40 % depends primarily on class discussion, which presupposes ATTENDANCE

(missing class more than three times will result in an

Incomplete), and on periodical quizzes.

20% depends on mid-term examination.

20% depends on paper.

20% depends on final examination.
