Weeks of December 12th & 19th

I hope you and your family have an enjoyable and restful holiday break!

Word Wall Words (reading words): jump, ask, of, them, want, with.

These will be introduced on Tuesday and we will continue to review and do activities with them throughout the next 2 weeks. Please practice them at home each night using the word ring your child will create in class. Students should be able to recognize and read the words by next Thursday, 12/22.

The spelling patternis listed on the colored sheet. Overview of the next 2 Weeks:

In Reader’s Workshop, we will read several new stories. We will enjoy big books, some Jan Brett books (our new “author in the spotlight”), mentor texts, as well as our leveled books. Students will focus on getting to know characters in books, and using what the main character does to do a summary/retelling.

In terms of phonics, we will continue to review the short vowel sounds and practice blending with different word families (graphemic bases) that have the short vowels. Students will also learn to how to read and write words with l-blends (examples: sl, pl, bl, fl, cl, gl).

During Writer’s Workshop, we will continue to focus on getting more writing on a page. These mini-lessons will help students elaborate on their small moment stories. We are using the TAG partner strategy to help each other with our writing.

In math we will begin Chapter 5: Addition and Subtraction Relationships. We will focus on related facts, use addition to check subtraction and strategies to help us know when to add or subtract to solve word problems.

In social studies, we will continue our unit on Holiday Customs around the world. Students are continuing to discover how different cultures and countries celebrate the holidays. We are learning so many interesting holiday customs from various countries! Ask your child who had the first tree, or the first stocking, or who La Befana is! Enjoy all the projects/decorations that will be sent home at the end of next week.

Next week will be filled with holiday cheer. We will enjoy holiday stories and activities. Students will also enjoy a holiday concert by our high school jazz band and a holiday sing-a-long on Friday morning. We will have our holiday party Thursday afternoon.

Enjoy!
