I am happy you are taking a mathematics course, and I want you to be successful. Success in

math is important to you, your parents and me. By following specific responsibilities

and expectations, you will significantly enhance your educational experience.

IB Overview:

International Baccalaureate (IB) offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. There are more than 700,000 IB students in more than 130 countries throughout the world. In essence, IB is a different way of approaching education. It is employed to organize cross-curricular units to give students a broader perspective of course content. Its main goal is to increase student awareness of global issues and better prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. This course will still follow the Michigan Merit Curriculum based on the State of MI High School Content Expectations, but will be organized into IB units.

The aim of all IB programs is to develop students who strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. The traits of IB Learner start with the home and extend to every learning opportunity so students will develop their awareness of, and sensitivity to, the experiences of others beyond the local or national community.

Topics covered:

During the first semester students will learn:

Modeling data and functions

Are the questions fair?

Measures of central tendency and probability

Are the graphic representations fair?

Linear models, Quadratic models, Exponential models and Logarithmic models

Can you predict the future from the past?

Supplies:

The math department suggests using the Casio fx9750GII.

I allow students to use my calculators in class.You will want your own for practice at home.

Textbook: Understanding Basic Statistics. Bring your own 3 ring binder,paper, colored pencils, highlighters.

Communication:

Student grades are available online through PowerSchool. Get your password through the office.

Attendance:

  1. Verified absences do not exclude you from practice or concepts taught. Tests missed due

to verified absences will be made up on the day you return (arrangements will be made in the case

of extended verified absences).

  1. If you know in advance that you will be absent, you are expected to make up your work before

missing class.

  1. If an absence is unverified, work cannot be made up and a zero will be earned.

Classroom Conditions:

The general disciplinary code as found in the student handbook will be followed.

Specific classroom discipline problems will be handled personally first and then will

involve parent and/or office consultation.

You can expect the classroom to be neat and clean when you enter and leave the room.

If the room or your table is not clean, tell me at the start of the hour.

Food, candy and pop do not belong in class; water is O.K.

Class begins at the bell, please be seated and ready to work. Class continues until dismissed

by the teacher. Any extra time in class is expected to be used for working on assignments.

Grading:

  1. Math portfolios count for 10percent of the semester grade.

Assignments are for practicing concepts and clarifying

student questions. (work must be shown)

Practice questions often look like quiz and test questions.

Portfolios will be checked during each learning unit.

This helps students develop their organizational skills.

  1. Quizzes and tests will be 90percent of the marking period grade.

  1. The semester exam will be 20percent of the semester grade.

Every student will take the first semester exam.

Students with 83% and less than 7 absences may waive the second semester exam.

Whenever it becomes necessary to convert into letter grades, the

following scale will be used:

A100 % - 93 %C76.9 % - 73 %

A-92.9 % - 90 %C-72.9 % - 70 %

B+89.9 % - 87 %D+69.9 % - 67 %

B86.9 % - 83 %D66.9 % - 63 %

B-82.9 % - 80 %D-62.9 % - 60 %

C+79.9 % - 77 %Fbelow 60 %
