Emergency Plans for First Grade

If I Ran the Zoo

Materials:

o  If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss (found in the Everyone section – E Seu)

o  Crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom)

o  “How About This?” Coloring page

Lesson:

o  Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what animal will be next.

o  Have students share their favorite part of the story.

o  Show students the “How About This?” coloring page.

o  Send students to tables to draw the animal they think Gerald McGrew would want for his zoo. Encourage them to make crazy mixed up animals.

o  Have students share their animals.


Clifford

Materials:

o  Any Clifford books by Norman Bridwell (found in the Everyone section – E Bri)

o  Clifford “All Year Long” mini-book

o  Crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom)

o  Scissors (scissors are on shelves in workroom)

Lesson:

o  Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next.

o  Have students share their favorite part of the story.

o  Send students to tables to color the mini-book.

o  Have students cut out & fold to assemble their mini-book.


Arthur

Materials:

o  Any Arthur book by Marc Brown (found in the Everyone section – E Bro)

o  Arthur coloring sheets (2 different pages)

o  Crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom)

o  Tape (in the checkout desk)

Lesson:

o  Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next.

o  Have students share their favorite part of the story.

o  Discuss how Arthur and his friends always work together and how today they will be working with a friend to make a picture. Show them how there are 2 parts to the Arthur picture. They will work on 1 page, a classmate will work on the other page and then you will tape the 2 parts together to make a whole picture.

o  Hand out pages (I suggest doing 1st page to one student and the 2nd page to the next student so you know you have a matching number of pages).

o  Send students to tables to color their Arthur pages.

o  As students finish their page tape it to the page of the next student who has the other ½ of the picture.


Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type

Materials:

o  Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin (found in the Everyone section – E Cro)

o  “Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type and Other Tales from the Farm” DVD (found in the Video/DVD section – DVD E Cli)

o  TV with DVD player

Lesson:

o  Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next.

o  Have students share their favorite part of the story.

o  Show students the “Click Clack Moo” section of the DVD.

o  If there is extra time, show students other selections from the DVD.


Harold and the Purple Crayon

Materials:

o  One of the Harold and the Purple Crayon books by Valerie Garfield (found in the Everyone section – E Gar)

o  Purple crayons (crayon buckets are on shelves in workroom, go through them and pull out 30 purple crayons)

o  Large butcher paper (rolls of white Library paper are in the workroom on the bottom shelf where the crayons are) Cut off 5 pieces about the length of your arm span. Students will use the plain white side.

Lesson:

o  Read the book to students. Pause periodically for students to make predictions about what will happen next.

o  Have students share their favorite part of the story.

o  Discuss how Harold makes things with his purple crayon.

o  Ask to students to share some things that Harold might draw with his purple crayon if he came to our school.

o  Explain that they will be working in small groups to make a purple mural of what Harold might draw if he came to our school.

o  Put students in small groups (no more than 4 in each group) and spread them out around the library to work on their murals.

o  Have groups share their murals.
