IMPERIAL COUNTY

CLASS TITLE: HVAC MECHANIC II

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor II-Mechanical, perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of large County heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, cooling towers, chilled water systems and related equipment and facilities; perform preventative maintenance and routine servicing of equipment and systems.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The HVAC Mechanic II classification is the advanced class in the series. Incumbents work on large heating units of 60 to 175-ton size and 40 million BTU low-pressure boilers. The HVAC Mechanic I classification is assigned to maintain and repair smaller HVAC equipment and systems. Incumbents work on gas, electrical and self-contained heating units of one to ten-ton size.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of water towers, chilled water systems, large refrigeration units, and low-pressure boilers, isolated heating and ventilating units, including water heaters, gas and electrically operated air-conditioning equipment and walk-in refrigerators and freezers; perform necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers.

Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air

conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.

thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers,

relays, filters, controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high-limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves and automatic gas valves.

Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps,

fans, and other equipment; clean water towers and paint periodically.

Install and calibrate systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as

necessary; test joints and insulate pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems;

flush boilers, descale tubing and cut and thread pipes; rebuild pressure and temperature

safety valves and water pumps.

Repair and maintain furnace gas controls and engines, filters and condensing units;

inspect, detect and repair leaks; check and replace thermo-couples and pilot generators;

clean and adjust pilots.

Operate a tractor, backhoe, boom truck, automotive vehicles, fork lift, welding equipment,

cutting torch, a variety of hand and power tools, vacuum pump and test equipment utilized

in the trade.

Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of

electrical equipment, components, timers, motors, relays, wiring systems, lights and

receptacles as needed; connect motors to control panels and panel to power sources.

Perform ARC and acetylene welding to repair cracks and leaks in systems and to

fabricate stands and braces.

Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems; repair or replace defective parts in units,

equipment and controls; dig trenches to locate, repair and replace wiring, pipes and parts

as needed.

Install, rebuild, replace or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves,

controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.

Maintain related records concerning inspections, work orders and equipment logs;

purchase materials and parts as needed.

Assist other skilled maintenance personnel in cooperative assignments as needed.

Train, assign and review work of other maintenance personnel and jail trustees as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.
