Human Papillomavirus (HPV) August 2012

Only for children aged 13-18 years who have not been immunised as part of the Year 7 School Immunisation Program, the Whitehorse City Council offers HPV vaccinations for a fee.

What is HPV (human papillomavirus)?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the name for a group of viruses that cause skin warts, genital warts and some cancers.
Can HPV infection be treated?
No. Treatments are only available for the effects of the virus, such as abnormal changes to cell in the cervix and genital warts.
Don’t confuse human papillomavirus (HPV) with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or herpes virus as they are different infections.
Why should my child be vaccinated at this age:
Vaccination with HPV vaccine is most effective when it is given to males and females before they are likely to be exposed to HPV, that is, before they start having sexual contact. /

How is the vaccine given:

GARDASIL® is given as a series of three injections into upper arm muscle. It is usually given within a six month period:
·  Dose one: at a chosen date
·  Dose two: 1-2 months after the first dose
·  Dose three: 4-6 months
The vaccine is most effective when all three doses have been given, that is, the full course is complete. Missed doses should be given as soon as possible.
Please note:
Currently the human papillomavirus vaccine is only free for students in Year 7. Those students who commenced a course in Year 7 and require dose 2 and/or dose 3 the vaccine is free only during the following school year (Year 8).
