Human Organs and Systems 2214 – Assessment 2009

The assessment for this unit is as follows:

You are required to complete 2 examinations both worth 50%.

Exam 1 (50%) 60 minutes duration (to be held on Monday, August 31stORduring the November examination period – YOU CHOOSE WHEN YOU WISH TO COMPLETE THIS EXAM!)

Part 1 (25%)

A series of about 30 short answer questions on material presented in lectures/lecture notes and/or identifying histological features/functions on projected images of cells, tissues and organs.

Images will be projected onto the computer screens in the histology classroom and questions will be asked. The format of the questions will be very similar to those questions contained within the review quizzes on “Meyer’s Histology” delivered through (accessed in the histology classroom only as ) and/or in Professor John Campbell’s UCLA website.

Part 2 (25%).

You will rotate through 20-25 sections of tissues/organs (either provided in a slide box or set up under microscopes) and you need to either identify each or state functions of these tissues/organs. You are able to change the magnification.

A full list of tissues/organs that will be tested will be listed in a separate link on this website titled “Identification of organs”.

All questions in Exam 1: Part 1 and 2 will only be taken from topics covered up until the “Non-teaching week” ie. the following topics:

Cardiovascular system

Endocrine system

Blood and bone marrow

Organ organisation

Female reproductive system

Male reproductive system

This material will not be re-examined in Exam 2 which covers all topics presented after the “Non-teaching week” (see below).

When can you complete these assessments?

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE ASKING ME ANY QUESTIONS

On Monday August 31st you can complete Exam 1; both Parts 1 and 2 need to be completed at either 12.30pm or 3.15pm. An early option at 11.15am may be available if there is sufficient demand.

Your “unofficial” results (worth 50%) will be available within 1 week of this exam.

On Monday October 19thyou can complete Exam 2; both Part 1 and 2 at either 12.30pm or 3.15pm. An early option at 11.15am may be available if there is sufficient demand.

Your “unofficial” results (worth 50%) will be available within 1 week of this exam.

If you complete both Exam 1 and 2 at the above mentioned times then you DO NOT need to complete any more examinations in the November exam period.

PLAN NOW TO DO THESE TWO EXAMS AND HAVE YOUR ASSESSMENTS COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF SEMESTER!

Exam 1 and 2 can only be completed at these times. For example, you cannot complete Exam 1 on Monday 19th October nor can I arrange for you to complete the exam at any other day/time during the week of both Exam 1 and 2.

If for any reason you cannot complete Exam 1 on Monday August 31st. This often applies to students who enrol late ie week 3 then you can still complete Exam 2 on October 19th and then Exam 1 in the November exam period.

If you decide not to do any of the exams 1 or 2 on Monday August 31st and October 19th then you must complete Exam 1 and 2 in the November exam period.

You cannot complete exam 1 or 2 and then decide to have another go in November to better your score!!

Finally…..a word about these exams

My personal view on examinations is that they be designed to confirm you have completed the learning objectives provided to you as we progress though the course curriculum.

You can confirm this YOURSELF informally, privately and individually by completing the numerous review quizzes supplied on the websites – particularly in Meyer’s Histology. HAVING COMPLETED THESE QUIZZES YOU SHOULD BE CONFIDENT OF SUCCESS (at least for Part 1 of each exam) AS THE QUESTIONS ASKED IN THESE TWO EXAMS WILL BE SIMILAR TO THOSE CONTAINED IN THE REVIEW QUIZZES.

From my experience over the last few years using this exam format I know that you will perform extremely well in Part 1 of each exam (due to you accessing all the review quizzes) but then let yourselves down in Part 2 of each exam ie. identifying histological sections of tissues/organs. So, my advice to you is to attend the laboratory sessions and ensure you can confidently identify the tissues/organs presented to you and ask for help if you are having difficulty. Use the website computerised microscope to review this skill at home. Maybe allocate an additional 30 minutes - 1 hour to come into the lab and review your slides each week. Ask us to come down and help you.

Good luck and enjoy. And continually ask yourself “where do I want my “grade” to be in the results graph presented in my introductory lecture?
