“A Once a Month Hands-on

Anatomical/Physiology Program

For High School Students”

The Human Body Explored (HBE) course is an academically challenging medical science awareness program, which is designed for high school students who are interested in careers in the health field. The HBE is the courses work component of LECOM’s Health Career Post 881, which is organized through its Community Services Department and the Exploring Division of the National BSA organization.

I. DESCRIPTION OF HUMAN BODY EXPLORED

  • TheHuman BodyExplored is a comparative anatomy/physiology course designed as an introductory pre-med/pre-science course for high school age students.
  • The goals for the HBE course are:
  • to stimulate and inform students about career opportunities in the health field
  • to provide an opportunity to examine anatomical differences between the human body and selected animal species; and
  • To prepare students to compete in the Kid’s Judge Health & Safety Fair.
  • A laboratory component provides hands-on experiments related to the lecture topic. Medical student are the instructors in the laboratory.
  • Post members meet for ~3.0 hours once a month from October – Aprilin a LECOM Bradenton anatomy room. There is a brief business meeting, which is followed by a 30 minute health careers presentation by a health care professional. For the remaining

1.5 h portion of the program, post members move to the anatomy laboratory for a brief lecture or demonstration followed by a laboratory session emphasizing a concept presented in the lecture.

  • The HBE students will be required to assist in the preparation of a team exhibit for aJudgedHealth & Safety Fair.
  • Several field trips to local hospitals/research institutions/medical offices are arranged during the program.

Student Eligibility & Registration Fees

Youths enrolled as high school students within the Manatee or Sarasota County School Districtare eligible to enroll in Health Careers Post881. Students must show proof of good academic and behavioral standing within their respective academic program. A dress and conduct code will be implemented during all Post activities. There is a limited enrollment in the HBE course of 44 students.

The registration fee forBasic HBE is $150. These fees include a registration fee, a material use fee, and for purposes of insurance all Post members are enrolled as Explorer Scouts through the Southwest Florida BSA Council. HBE Meeting Dates, Time & Location

The HBE course begins in January and run through May. Meetings are scheduled for the 1st or 2ndMonday of each month (unless there is a conflict such as spring break) from 5:15 pm until 8:00 pm. Meeting will be held at LECOM - Bradenton, which is located at 5000 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Bradenton, FL.

II. A JUDGED HEALTH & SAFETY FAIR

The Health & Safety Fair is a presentation of hands-on health & safety exhibits prepared by the HBE students, LECOM medical students, and high school science clubs members. The exhibits are judged by 9thgrade students.

  • The fair is scheduled for a weekday in April from 9:00 am till noon at Manatee High School.
  • The exhibits are judged by 9th grade students as to how effective and fun was the demonstration of the health or safety concept.
  • Monetary awards are presented to the top three places
