Texts: Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine Marieb 4th edition

Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory by Elaine Marieb (main version 9th ed. W/ PhysioEx CD –update, if possible)

Course Description: This course is designed as a detailed study of human anatomy and physiology. In this course, the endocrine system through reproduction and growth and development will be studied in both lecture and lab. This course is primarily designed for majors in the allied health field. This is a lecture and lab course and satisfies the lab science requirement for general education.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course you should be able to. . .

  1. Understand the structure, function, and relationships between those human body systems that we studied.
  2. Predict and describe the anatomical and physiological results of disruptions to the normal status of the human organism

Tests and Grading: There are a possible 1150 points to be earned in this course. There will be 6 lecture tests and comprehensive final exam that will determine your grade for the lecture portion of this course. Each of these tests will be worth 100 points. There will be 10 lab quizzes each worth 10 points, 25 labs each worth 10 points and two lab practicals of 50 points each to determine your grade for the lab portion of the course. One quiz score will be dropped prior to the calculation of the final grade. There will be several extra credit opportunities, with a maximum possible 25 points. The grading scale is as follows:

A= 1030-1150 pointsB= 915-1029 points C= 800-914 points

D= 685-799 points F= 684 or fewer points

A lecture exam can only be made up in the event of a verifiable student absence, provided that the student has notified the instructor (face to face). You must schedule an appointment to take the exam prior to the next scheduled class meeting. All make upexams will be essay exams. Any challenges to the grading of an exam must be made in writing within one calendar week of the exams return. The only place to examine actual test questions is in my office. Any student who enters an exam or quiz late will not be given any extra time to take the exam, and if sufficiently late, will not be allowed to take the exam at all. There is no make up for lab quizzes or practicals.

Academic Dishonesty: Acts of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated and are considered serious offenses by EAC. Any such action by the student will be reported to the dean in charge of Academic Affairs. Penalties could range from loss of points to permanent expulsion from the college.

Withdrawal Policy: Please be aware of EAC withdrawal dates. They are listed in the lecture schedule. If you miss the date to withdraw yourself and wish for me to withdraw you from the course, you must initiate that process. Do not assume that I will automatically withdraw you from the course. It will not happen.

A last word: No matter where you go or when you take it, Human Anatomy and Physiology is a difficult course, particularly the physiology concepts that will be studied in this course. Make a decision right from the start to spend serious time studying both the lecture and lab. Make the most of your study time; use flashcards; study with others; draw pictures; try and write your own test. Do not miss class or lab. It will hurt your chances at a good grade. Please feel free to contact me for study ideas or help. It’s why I’m there.
