Classic large caliber double barrel pistol in the English gunsmith school style,used at close range to stop tigers which commonly leaped upon elephants carrying hunters in the Howdahs on the elephants backs in the far away colonial territories.No doubt having a large caliber ,powerful handgun at hand came in handy when dealing with the locals who now had to serve . The stock is a three-quarter stock w/checkered pistol grip. European walnut w/satin finish. 50 cal. double barrel, blued, tapered round - .985 at breeh to .825 at muzzle. Broach rifled.005" deep. 1 in 18" twist w/12 lands .500 and .12 grooves .510. Front sight is a brass bead. Barrel is 11 1/4" in length. Uses #11 percussion caps. Features color casehardened steel furniture which includes locks, buttcap, wedge plates, triggerplate, triggerguard & tang. Engraved lockplates (Rhino & scrolls on one - Leopard on other). Scroll engraving on hook breech tang & triggerplate. Overall length of pistol is 18 1/2". Uses a 1/4X28 nipple (NP1365). Recommended load is 25 grains of 2F black powder - .490 round ball - .010 patch. Manufactured in Italy by Pedersoli.Examples of Howdah pistols in other calibers is given in this document. In some cases calibers up to .80 is reported used by English colonialists as sidearms/howdah guns .And yes- both barrels can be fired practically at the same time.
