Recorder/ Caller - Organises the competitors

  1. Call athletes together mark them off
  1. Ask if anyone will need to go to a Track event during the next 30 minutes, mark their name. Ask what event and try and get them to stay as long as possible before leaving you may need to let them have their “throw” first to ensure the flow of the competition .
  2. Explain the procedure to athletes
They have one warm up throw in order.

They will be called up to throw in the following way eg Smith followed by Brown. “Smith” throws whilst “Brown” gets ready. “Brown” followed by “Jones”. Be listening for your name

Once the javelin has landed , walk back out of the runway and back to the recorder to check your name. Go back and sit with the rest of the athletes to wait for your next throw.

At the Secondary level athletes will receive 3 throws in total. The best throw recorded will be the winner. Students in the top 3 need to remain at the Field event whilst results are checked by the Field Referee so that they can receive their medals. If they have to leave to compete in another event it is their responsibility to return to see if they have won a medal at some stage during the day.

At the Primary level - All throwers will be given three throws , the top 5 throwers will progress to final and be given 3 more throws. The longest throw will be declared the winner. The result is checked by the Field Referee. Primary winners will be taken by one of the officials (eg. Staker) with the presenters slip to the presentation area and the official results will be sent to the recording table.

best throws, these are your finalists. Congratulate the rest of the athletes who may leave
or stay and watch as they choose. Repeat the above procedure for the next 3 throws for
these five athletes. Transfer their best throw into the best column and the best throw for
all the other athletes who only had three throws. Fill in the place column from 1st for

Reading the Measurement / Fouls -

The Javelin must be delivered using on overarm action above the shoulder.

The competitor in a throw must not touch with any part of his body the lines which mark the boundaries of the throwing area or the ground outside.

The competitor must wait until the javelin has landed before leaving the runway.

The javelin must land within the throwing sector lines with the tip of the javelin making contact with the ground first.

If any of the above is violated it is a foul raise the red flag. A foul will not be measured.

If the throw is good raise the white flag.

Measure the throw from where the tip of the javelin first struck the ground to the inside edge of the arc with the tape in a straight line through the centre of the circle.

Call the measurement at the inside edge of the circle clearly. The recorder will repeat the measurement back to you. Repeat the measurement back to the recorder as confirmation.

Staking the Throw
The stake goes in where the tip of the javelin first struck the ground. Watch closely as the javelin lands and then move quickly to stake the spot. Once the measurement has been called out you may leave the throwing area ready for the next thrower. Always keep your eyes on the throwing area and watch for javelins

Returning the javelins

One person will collect the javelins and walk them back to the throwing area. Please ensure only the correct weight javelin for the age group is put out for use.
