2002-2006Allegheny College Service Leader

  • Organized 3 different afterschool programs during college to mentor and tutor for children living in low-income housing neighborhoods.

2008–2009Operation Safety Net

  • Walked throughout the streets of Pittsburgh with a group of outreach workers to provide health care for the homeless population.

2008–2010Birmingham Clinic

  • Dedicated time to providing free healthcare for the uninsured of Pittsburgh at the Birmingham clinic. In addition to caring for adult patients with general medical conditions, participated in the Guerilla Eye Service to provide ophthalmic care and with Salud Para Niños to provide pediatric care for Spanish speaking families.

2010-2011Gold Humanism Honor Society

  • Peer-elected as vice-president. Developed ‘Bagels and Burnout’ a curriculum focused on prevention of and coping with burnout among medical students to promote humanistic care.

2012-PresentCommunity Resource Connection

  • Established an extensive community resource guide to help address the unmet basic social needs of families seeking care at a public health clinic in Seattle. Currently, developing an iPhone application to serve as an easily accessible catalog of local resources.

GLOBAL HEALTH EXPERIENCE

2006Teacher & Volunteer Platorand School & Belfast Children’s Home Belfast, South Africa

  • Spent five months independently volunteering as a teacher at a school for learning disabled adolescents and started an after school program for children at a local orphanage by working with local community members.

2008 Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos International Leogane & Port-au-Prince, Haiti

  • Studied public health interventions to eliminate lymphatic filariasis in Leogane, Haiti. Observed healthcare, education and basic service delivery in Cite Soleil.

  • Committed to studying global health over the course of all four years of medical school in order to gain an understanding of international health disparities, research methods in public health, the global burden of disease and the local relevance of global health issues.

2008-2011Touching Tiny Lives, Medical Advisory Board Member Mokhotlong, Lesotho

  • Volunteered for 3 months by caring for severely ill and malnourished children in the organization’s rehabilitation center and by helping provide support to families with the community outreach workers. Served as a member of this NGO’s medical advisory board.

2012-PresentCommunity Pediatrics Advocacy and Global Health Pathway Kisii, Kenya

  • Focused on promoting child health locally and globally during pediatric residency by participating in intensive didactics on fundamentals of public and global health in Seattle, Washington. Conducted a community-based child health needs assessment focused on diarrheal illness in Kisii, Kenya.
