ADVISORS’ EDITION

The 2018 convention theme is “SERVICE with the STARS!,” a member-oriented theme that invites commitment and involvement to the organization’s core value. The spotlight will be on club members and the amazing ways that they choose to serve their homes, schools and communities. The Kansas District Conference is a celebration of the projects and accomplishments of the members this past year. As always, it has been planned by Key Club members for Key Club members.

The emphasis is on theexchange of new ideas and approaches that attendees can take home and adapt to their clubs and communities. There are workshops to help clubs accomplish more, to encourage personal development and to suggest and expand the future for all members, whether they graduate this year or return next year. An advisors’ update and Q&A session will be held Saturday evening and there will be a forum workshop Sunday morning.

Other highlights include the Saturday afternoon District Project, theFriday and Saturday night caucuses and Sunday morning House of Delegates that determine which candidates will serve on the 2017-18 District Board,a choice of 13 workshops, the Friday mixer and the Governor’s Farewell Sunday morning. From registration on Friday until the Sunday noon conclusion, it is a weekend packed with opportunities for social networking, exchanging best practices and gathering new ideas.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three Key Clubs with entries in the Scrapbook, Single Service and Overall Achievement competitions. The talent show, impromptu essay and oratory contests recognize the achievements of individual members, and the winners of Key Clubber of the Year and Faculty Advisor of the Yearwill be presented with plaques. Details for entries are included in this packet.

The $95 registration fee includes three meals (Saturday noon and evening, plus the Sunday morning Farewell brunch),the convention T-shirt, plus all conference activities and materials! With four people to a room, the cost is about $150 per person for the weekend. For answers to specific questions, contact Chuck Sack by email at“”.

PREPARATIONS FOR THE KANSAS DISTRICT CONFERENCE

1. CONFIRM ROOM RESERVATIONS FOR YOUR GROUP. The conference rate is $100.00 plus tax (16.25%) per room per night for one to four occupants. If you pay with a school check and bring a copy of the school’s tax ID to convention, you will not have to pay the sales tax. The rate is guaranteed through March 23. Call the Wichita Marriott (316-651-0333) orMarriott Reservations (800-228-9290) to book reservations. Make reservations now; rooms secured with a credit card can be canceleduntil 48 hours in advance.

2. ENCOURAGE YOUR ATTENDEES TO PARTICIPATE IN COMPETITIONS AND TO RUN FOR DISTRICT OFFICE. Any registered Key Clubber may enter the talent and oratory contests, but they will need to prepare. The essay contest requires no advance preparation. Freshmen, sophomores or juniors are eligible to run for District Office. For information on the political process, contact your Lt. Governor or other district officers listed in this packet. Clubs can also submit nominations for Key Clubber and Faculty Advisor of the Year.

3. CONTACT YOUR SPONSORING KIWANIS CLUB AND REQUEST FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. The District recommends that the club pay a third, of the registration, the Kiwanis Club pay a third and that the individual pays a third, but practices vary. Most Kiwanis Clubs will help pay a portion of their Key Club and advisor’s registration fees. If your sponsoring Kiwanis Club does not have a line item in the budget for the Key Club convention, ask their board to institute this next year!

4. MAKE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS. Different schools have different rules. However, every Key Club in good standing has liability insurance through Kiwanis International that covers them from the time they leave for the conference until they return. Primary coverage is through the driver of the vehicle, with the Key Club policy as a supplement for dues-paying members.

5. ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CONVENTION. Nervous anticipation makes students receptive to constructive planning. Travel time is an excellenttime to discuss the benefits of having your members attend different workshops, instead of everyone going tothesame one. Students may also want to hear your opinions on running for district office and you willwant to select your club’s two delegatesin advance.

6. APRIL6, CHECK IN AT THE HOTEL REGISTRATION DESK. Have

your Key Clubbers proceed to the DCon check-in table in the convention center lobby to register, get their name badges and conference packets. They can get your registration materials and bring them to you while you’re in line to check into your rooms atthe front desk of the hotel.

PLEASE NOTE: The topics listed are tentative, as are the names of the organizers following each topic. At this time outlines and descriptions of each of these topics have been prepared. Invitations have been issued to outside presenters for some topics.

The format for each 45 minute workshop and the handouts for every workshop are in development. It is anticipated that the majority of these workshops will be offered at the convention. Factors that may alter any specific workshop include: convention registration, illness or breakdown of a workshop planner, cancellation by presenters, happenstance or a dog eating a handout.

The board is resilient and adaptable to most crises. Once in a great while a workshop is eliminated. More often, there is some advance notice and we make a substitution.
