Class Schedule: 11/13-11/17

Reminders—

  • East Asia map quiz—Friday, December 1st
  • Atlas—due Monday, December 4th—make sure you’re using your time over the Thanksgiving break to put the finishing touches on the maps! You should not have too much work to do on it if you have been working diligently in class on our map days and finishing each map in a timely manner! Remember the atlas is worth two test grades.

Monday 11/13 and Tuesday 11/14:

  • Topic—East Asia Physical Geography and Map Work
  • Reading—Read the Physical Geography notes on East Asia in Schoology before class on Monday. You should start learning this material and the related vocabulary NOW!!

Wednesday 11/15:

  • Topic—How did the Warring States Period contribute to Chinese political philosophy?
  • Reading in the text—Ch. 4.4, p. 104-107 (stop at “The Qin Dynasty Unifies China”).

Take notes on each of the philosophies (Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism) from the text. Make sure you define vocabulary, know who inspired each philosophy and understand the important ideas. Your notes should thoroughly address the following questions:

  • Discuss Confucius’ methods for creating social order in Chinese society.
  • What were the other two philosophies that developed during the Warring States Period and what was the basic idea of each?
  • As illustrated in the chart “Chinese Ethical Systems” on page 106, what is the common goal of all three of the ethical systems described?

Thursday 11/17:

  • Topic—How did the Warring States Period contribute to Chinese political philosophy? Daoism
  • Reading—Read the file titled “reading primary source Chinese Philosophies” posted in schoology, beginning at “China: Thought in Search of Harmony” and stop at “Confucianism: The Way of the Superior Man”.
  • Answer the Questions for Analysis in the middle of each section. You should be able to reference specific examples and illustrations from the text.
  • Be prepared to DISCUSS the primary source excerpts about Daoism in class today (pages 1-3, stop at “Confucianism: The Way of the Superior Man” and answer the questions for analysis on page 2)

Friday 11/18:

  • Topic—How did the Warring States Period contribute to Chinese political philosophy? Confucianism
  • Reading— Chinese Philosophies Primary Source beginning at “Confucianism: The Way of the Superior Man” to the end of the packet on page 6.
  • Answer the Questions for Analysis in the middle of each section. You should be able to reference specific examples and illustrations from the text.
  • Be prepared to DISCUSS the primary source excerpts about Confucianism in class today (pages 3-4, answer the Questions for Analysis on page 3)
