How to import Rail Simulator sound/scenario packs into RailWorks

Please note that these instructions only advise on how to import our products into RailWorks and do not ensure complete compatibility as our products were specifically designed for Rail Simulator.

‘How to’ in steps

Sound Packs

1)  Find the installer .exe that you downloaded when you first downloaded your sound pack.

2)  Run it and where it shows the Destination Directory as C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator, change this to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks.

3)  Then run the installer as normal.

4)  If the Rail Simulator package manager appears after installation, exit this. If your chosen sound pack has a scenario, move to step 5, if not, your sound pack is now successfully installed in RailWorks.

5)  To install the scenario that came with your sound pack, go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\AP. For the VP185 and MTU, their scenarios can be found inside the ‘Scenario’ folder, the rest can be found in their respective folders. Find the relevant .rpk and install using the Package Manager in RailWorks. Your scenario should now be installed.

6)  Now locate the relevant ‘Extra Stock’ installer for the sound pack.

7)  Run it and where it shows the Destination Directory as C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator, change this to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks.

8)  Then run the installer as normal.

9)  Your scenario should now function properly*. Repeat this whole process for each sound pack you would like installed in RailWorks.

Scenario Packs

1)  Find the installer .exe that you downloaded when you first downloaded your scenario pack.

5)  To install the scenarios, go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\AP. Double click the folder which is named as the scenario pack you just installed and install the .rpk inside that folder using the Package Manager in RailWorks. Your scenarios should now be installed.

9)  Your scenarios should now function properly*. Repeat this whole process for each scenario pack you would like installed in RailWorks.

*Due to these scenarios being built for Rail Simulator, some may fail to operate. We plan to release RailWorks compatible versions of these in the next few weeks. Please send an e-mail to if you get any problems with scenarios failing to load and I will get the updated scenarios to you as soon as they’re ready.

Problems with sound packs regarding RailWorks

First of all, due to the way RailWorks works, it is important you go offline on Steam so to stop updates which overwrite any of our sound packs. If you are happy with reinstalling this sound pack every time RailWorks updates though there is no need to do this. If you would rather not do this though, to go offline from Steam so to make sure definitely no updates are

downloaded, go to 'File' and then click 'Go Offline...' and click 'Restart in offline mode'. If a fundamental update to RailWorks is released which you would like you would need to follow the same instructions above but inverse so you would click 'Go Online...' instead of 'Go Offline...'. If you do this though, you will have to reinstall this add-on after the update to RailWorks has installed for this sound pack to work again.
