How to find announcements and apply for a job on-line:

  1. Go to . Click on SEARCH JOBS. Basic Searchtab: Keyword Search (i.e., part-time, IRS, or accounting) or Job Category Search (i.e., Accounting, Budget and Finance); Agency Search tab: IRS is listed under “Treasury, Department of the”; Series Search tab: enter all 4digits in the Series Number Search box such as Revenue Agent=0512, Tax Specialist= 0526, Engineer=0801, Revenue Officer=1169, Special Agent=1811, I.T. Specialist=2210, etc. To search an entire occupation group, enter only the first two digitsAccounting & Finance = 05,Engineer=08, Law Enforcement=18, Information Technology=22. You may select other parameters such as in Location Search. Click on the Search for Jobs icon at the bottom.Note: Always include a search using the default setting in the Location Search section. For an announcement with multiple locations ("US-Throughout the Nation, US"), you may not be able to retrieve it if you include a specific location in your initial search.
  2. Students – Series Number Search enter “0099” for Student Trainee, General or type “99” after the related occupation group (e.g., Special Agent Co-op=1899). You may also type “part-time” or “temporary” in the Keyword Search for part-time positions. In addition, you may substitute for in these directions to search for student positions.
  3. The announcement will appear if it is currently open. Click on the job title. Scroll to the bottom and click print preview; and print the detailed version of the job announcement. Use this hardcopy for future reference. Once closed, the announcement will not longer appear on this website.
  4. Read the Qualifications section to determine if you are eligible for the position. The How to Apply section will tell you how to submit your information. If there is an Apply Online icon at the bottom of the page, then you may submit your application electronically. You CANNOT apply through a recruiter.
  5. If you apply online, you will usually receive an e-mail stating your eligibility within 24 hours. You may have to turn off any “spam blocker” program in order toreceive e-mails from Personnel.
  6. Submit the required information (resume, application, transcripts, etc.) as directed in the announcement and before the closing date on the announcement.
  7. Contact the person listed at the end of the job announcement, for any follow-up questions.
  8. In all cases, you can only apply on-line for a federal job when it is open on the website. For most IRS positions, you will have to answer a series of questions regarding your experience, skills, and/or education. It is very important that you take your time in responding to the various questions and view all drop-down menus. Candidates are ranked into categories. Potential category ratings are Superior, Highly Qualified, Qualified and Ineligible (sometimes ratings Category A, Category B, Category C and Ineligible are used). For Revenue Agents only, only Highly Qualified, Qualified and Ineligible (or Category A, Category B, and Ineligible) are used. Tax Specialist / Tax Compliance Officers applicants are not pre-qualified. Generally, only the highest ratings will be considered for, but not guaranteed, an interview.

How to sign up to receive Automated Job Alerts:

  1. Go toand Click on “My USAJOBS” - either “Become a My USAJOBS member” by selecting “Create your account now!” [new user] or Log In [existing user].
  2. You can also track your application or create a new resume – your resume DOESNOT consider you for any job application, but you may upload this information to each application.
  3. Select the Manage Agents link and click on “Create New Agent.”
  4. Select each parameter and/or leave the default settings - hold Control Key for multiple items. Note: Entry-Level Grade Level (normally) - for Students: 3 to 4; Bachelors: 5 to 7 or Masters: 7 to 9.
  5. In the bottom box, type in a heading (i.e., IRS Jobs) for your e-mail job announcements.
  6. Example: Click and hold the control button and pick the cities and areas (e.g., MI: Detroit, Ann Arbor, etc.; OH: Cleveland, Youngstown, Akron, and/or Northwestern Ohio); Optional to select a Grade (see #4 above); and type a Title: Detroit Area Federal Jobs or Cleveland Area Federal Jobs. This is one agent. You may have up to 10 different agents – such as specific type of job; the whole state (MI or OH); for the Treasury Dept. (IRS) under Agency. You may edit and make additions at any time. You must use your Username and Password to re-enter the system to make changes to the agent or to your resume, including an updated e-mail address.
