How to Create an iSCSI Target Volume

1) Server Manager is open by default after login. If it is not open, open Start Menu. Right click on Computer and choose Manage.

2) If it is not already created, create a partition on the DATA drive and format it.If it is already created, skip to step 6. You can create the virtual disk on the SYSTEM drive. But it is not recommended for easy recovery purposes. Open “Storage” on the right pane. Click Disk Management. On the left pane, right click on the disk on which you want to create the partition.Choose New Simple Volume.

3) At this time, note the maximum disk space in MB. Discard the last three digits. This will help you determine the maximum virtual disk sizewhen prompted to enter it later. Click Next.

4) Choose and note the drive letter and click Next.

5) Choose quick format or leave as is to regular format just to be safe. Regular format may take a very long time due to a large array size. Click Next. Click Finish.

6) Right click on the iSCSI Targets and choose Create iSCSI Target. Click Next.

7) Enter a name and description of your choice and click Next.

8) Now it will ask you to enter the IQN of the Client Computer/Server. But it is much easier to find the IP number you set on the client Computer/Server. This IP number is not the iSCSI Target Server’s IP. It is the IP of the client computer/server that will be connected to this AberNAS. To enter the IP number, click Advanced.

9) Click Add. Choose IP Address from the Drop-down menu.

10) If you haven’t set the client computers yet, you may enter any IP number and you can change it later. Click OK two times. Click Next. Click Finish.

11) Right click on the target name you just created and choose Create Virtual Disk for iSCSI Target. Click Next.

12) Click Browse and choose the data drive you partitioned on steps 1 to 5. Enter a name for the virtual disk file that you are going to create. It must end with “.vhd”. For example “test.vhd”. Click Next.

13) It will now ask you to enter for the disk size you would like to create. Please keep in mind that most 32 bit Operating Systems that are going to connect to this server will not recognize over 2 TB. If you create a virtual disk larger than 2 TB, your client computer/server may not recognize it. Please refer to your client OS documentation for maximum hard disk or array size. Most of the 32 bit operating systems will recognize Network shares over 2 TB but this has nothing to do with hard disk limitations. For 64 bit operating systems, the maximum iSCSI volume that AberNAS can create is 16 TB. For this example we assumed a 64 bit client connection, andwe chose to use single virtual disk allocation for the whole drive we partitioned. We entered the number we noted on Step 3 and added three zeroes. Basically we rounded the number down. Just to make sure, you might want to enter a couple of GB less than the number you noted on Step 3. Click Next.

14) Enter a description of your choice. Click next and click Finish.

15) If you need to add or modify the initiators that are going to connect to this server, right click on the iSCSI Target you created and choose Properties. You can add more initiators to connect or you can modify them.
