What is Copyright?
If you write an original novel, computer programme, compose a song, make a move, etc., that original work is your intellectual property and you own the copyright. This means you have the right to decide who uses your work, if they can change it, redistribute it or make money from it and whether they need to credit you for producing the original work.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the wrongful taking of another person’s intellectual property and claiming it as your own. Students are finding very easy to find essays and coursework online that other students have done and submitting it as their own. Teachers need to be good at identifying when this is happening.
It is also considered plagiarism to use parts of another person’s work without attributing the ideas/work to them. This is particularly important in research.

Fair Use
Fair use is a concept that permits the usage of a work as long as that usage doesn't take advantage of what would be considered reasonable. It was conceived in an effort to advance our knowledge; much of our work in research is built on the work of others. Teachers may photocopy small sections of a book that is under copyright without seeking permission from the copyright holder. There are some stipulations but Fair Use generally gives teachers latitude.
