How do you like them Apples?

This exercise can be used as a means of expanding our repertoire of teaching methods, as well as strengthen our ability to select appropriate teaching methods for various educational objectives. Faculty may also find this exercise useful in reconsidering current teaching methods being used and as a way to update or select new teaching methods for different class learning objectives. Our goal for this session is to encourage student-instructor engagement through our discussion of teaching methods.

Gameplay Components:

1-Methods cards

2-Objectives cards

Methods cards include the description, advantages and disadvantages of the given teaching strategy.

Objectives cards are linked to the different learning outcomes associated with our classes.

Directions:

  1. We will break into groups of 5-6 players.
  2. Each player will be dealt six ‘methods’ cards to start the game.
  3. Players will take turns alternating as ‘dealer’ each hand.
  4. Objectives cards will be placed face down in the center of the table. Each hand will require the selection of one objective card by the dealer.
  5. Players should read the objective card and then select the method (from their hand) that they feel would be best used to achieve the selected learning objective. Each player has one minute to try to persuade the dealer/provide examples that their method is most effective and appropriate in helping students achieve the selected learning objective.
  6. Note: there are a few ‘wild cards’ in the deck. Players holding a ‘wild card’ may use any method previously discussed or create a new method to share with the group.
  7. Once all players have presented their method card, the dealer will select the method that they feel has been most persuasive in achieving the given learning objective. This player is awarded a point.
  8. Note: the dealer does not ‘play’ during the hand in which they are the dealer. (Otherwise they would likely vote for themselves).
  9. The winner (other than our students who will benefit from our new and varied instructional methods) will be the player with the most votes at the end of our allotted time period.
