PARENT REFUSAL of English Language Learner Services

Date:______

Student Name: ______

08-09 School: White House Middle School______Grade:______

ELL Teacher: Marie Taylor______

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Based on your child’s English test scores and level of academic achievement, your child is eligible for the English Language Learner Program. This program will help your child improve his or her speaking, reading, writing and listening skills in English and will greatly improve his or her chances of doing well in school. Students usually participate in the program for three to four years, but you may request that your child exit the program at any time. Parents may opt to refuse these services, but they must do so in writing.

Your child’s English proficiency was measured using the Tennessee Department of Education’s English Language Development Assessment (ELDA). Your child’s composite level of English proficiency was: ______.

Students in kindergarten through 5th grade have a special 30 minute English class every day with other English Language Learners in his or her school. Students in grades 6 through 12 have an ELL class for one period (45 to 90 minutes) every day.

There is no charge for the English Language Learner Program and all materials and textbooks are provided free of charge.

If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Dr. Nina Morel, Sumner County Schools ELL Coordinator, at 451-7013 or email .

PLEASE READ AND SIGN BELOW: I understand the ELL Program in SumnerCounty and the benefit it may bring to my child. However, I am refusing services for my child at this time. I understand that my child must still be tested in English every year, according to federal law.
