YOU PLAN SHOULD HAVE EACH OF THE FOUR COMPONENTS

ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

  1. IS IT TOPICAL?
  • Topicality means that the plan has to be relevant so that it fits the debate’s resolve. This year, the resolved is, “That the United States government should substantially increase…………….
  • To make sure that your plan is topical, you should make sure that your plan does not go against any of the violations listed in the table of contents in the topicality book (see attached sheet)
  • If the team you are debating against does not fit topicality, do not be afraid to bring it up in your negative
  • If there is no topicality, there is no debate. If the negative team can prove that your plan does not fit the resolve, then your plan is null and void. It doesn’t matter how good your plan is, if it doesn’t fit the resolve, you will lose the debate.
  1. IS IT FEASIBLE?
  • Feasible means that your plan is logical and possible.
  • Ridiculous plans will not win; they will only serve to embarrass you
  • Just because your plan fits the resolve, doesn’t mean that it is feasible. Your plan should be able to be put into action.
  • Branch says that, “If Branch laughs at you and points, it’s bad.”
  1. IS IT FUNDABLE? IN OTHER WORDS, CAN YOU PAY FOR IT
  • To tell if your plan is fundable, you should ask yourself these questions:
  • Does your plan cost money?
  • Where is the money coming from?
  • How much money are you going to need?
  • How did you calculate your funding?

DO NOT GET YOUR FUNDING FROM A CIGARETTE TAX!! IT NEVER WORKS!!

  1. IS IT ACCEPTABLE?

DO NOT:

Curse

Insult

Offend the debaters or judges

Flirt with the judges

Laugh at the other team

Talk loudly to your partner

Talk to your partner while they are giving their speech

DO NOT use visual aides. Pictures, maps, a calculator etc. – You will be disqualified.

Do:

Shake hands with your opposing team before and after the debate

Ask to finish your sentence if you’re in the midst of talking when your time is up

Win!!!
