FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The first step is to book an introductory flight. This flight with one of our Instructors is a short flight with to help you decide if flying is for you. If you have already decided that you want to learn to fly, your first step is to visit the club and enroll in your chosen course, and book a first lesson. Remember that now is also the time to arrange for the medical exam. You may take lessons while waiting for medical approval but this must be received before solo flight can be authorized.

How long will it take to completed the license or permit?

Everyone works at their own pace. There is no time limit for flight training. Most students work full-time or attend other educational institutions while learning to fly.

A Recreational Permit can be completed in 3 to 4 weeks if flying on a full time schedule.

A Private Pilot License can be completed in 4-7 weeks if flying on a full time schedule.

Most students complete their license or permit in approximately 3 months.

The more often you fly the shorter the time required to complete the course since there will be less to review each flight.

WHEN CAN I TRAIN

The Brandon Flying Club is open daylight hours seven days a week for training.

All initial training must be completed during daylight hours.

ARE THOSE SMALL PLANES SAFE?

YES! We train in the Cessna C-172, which holds the title of the safest light aircraft in the world. This aircraft is still in production today.

CAN I PAY AS I GO?

Yes you may pay as you go but this may lead to higher costs due to the unfortunate “go as you can pay” situation. This happens when a student learns a skill but forgets part of the lesson because a long time has passed since the last flight.

IS FINANCING AVIALABLE?

Yes. The Brandon Flying Club is a member of the Air Transport Association of Canada and can offer financing through Green Light Financial Services, which is a division of the TD Bank. Application forms are available at the club.

ARE THERE BONUSES FOR PREPAYMENT?

YES! For any prepayments over $1000.00 you will receive an immediate 5% bonus.

Pay $1000.00 have $1050.00 available on your account. This is available in multiples of 1000.00 (2000, 3000, 4000).

If you pay $5000.00 you will receive an ASA HS-1 Aviation Headset PLUS your 5% Bonus.

If you refer a friend you will receive two free hours when that friend solos. The referral must be recorded at enrolment.

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CLUB AND A COMMERCIAL SCHOOL?

NO! All flight-training units in Canada operate under the same rules set and enforced by Transport Canada.

THE GROUND SCHOOL TIMES ARE INCONVENIENT FOR ME, WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE?

We offer more than our regular classroom instruction. We have online ground schools as well as self study courses. Ask your instructor for more information.

ABOUT US

OUR HISTORY

Brandon Flying Club (BFC) was originally founded in 1929 as the Brandon – Virden Flying Club. In the early years the club’s facilities were located on Brandon’s north hill, approximately where today’s Purolator building stands.

The BFC was incorporated on February 12, 1944. After the Second World War, the club purchased Hangar #2 at the Brandon Airport.

BFC is still located in this hangar, which was built for the war effort, at the Brandon Municipal Airport. The current administrative facilities are housed in the north lean to. In 2001 our offices under went renovations to accommodate more modern requirements.

Over our many years of operation the BFC has trained thousands of pilots from all over the country, and even international students have chose to train at Brandon. During the peak of the club’s operations BFC owned 10 aircraft.

Today, BFC operates a fleet of three Cessna 172s.

The Brandon Flying Club is a true not-for-profit corporation, owned by its members. All persons using BFC facilities must hold a valid club membership. This membership, which costs $50.00 per year, entitles members to use the club facilities, rental of aircraft, and members receive the club newsletter.

Brandon Flying Club is proud to be a member of the following organizations.
