Houston ISD – House Bill 5 Criteria

Fine Arts – ECC/Elementary School
  1. All K-5 students receive a TEKS-based education in art, music, and theatre during regular school hours taught by properly certified teachers.

  1. Students participate in at least (4) art exhibits during the school year including the HISD Visual Arts Spring Showcase.Some suggestions are Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Contest, Capitol Art Show, Texas Elementary Art Meet (TEAM).

  1. Each music, dance, and theatre group participates in at least (2) school campus programs and at least one district-wide performance (HISD Honor Choir, HISD Choral Festival, HISD Orff Festival, HISD Piano Festival, HISD Dance Festival, Dance Montage, One-Act Play, Elementary Band Festival, Elementary String Orchestra Festival).

  1. Students participate in at least one fine arts field trip during the school year. Suggestions are Museum of Fine Arts Houston and The Houston Symphony (The Museum offers free transportation and free admittance to all HISD 3rd grade students and the Symphony offers free bus transportation and free admittance to their concerts for elementary students.)

  1. Schools partner with at least one professional arts organization that will provide supplemental in-school programming and/or after school opportunities. These programs do not replace the TEKS-based education mentioned in #1.

Fine Arts – Middle School
  1. Schools offer at least (3) TEKS-based classes in fine arts disciplines (art, dance, music, theatre) and every student completes at least one TEKS-based fine arts credit.

  1. Students participate in at least (4) art exhibits includingthe HISD Visual Arts Spring Showcase.Some suggestions are Jr. VASE, Scholastic Art, and Houston Livestock and Rodeo School Art Contest.

  1. All performing arts students participate in at least (3) school programs. In addition, music students participate in district sponsored contests (HISD Band Festival, HISD Guitar Festival, HISD Orchestra Festival, HISD Choral Festival, HISD Piano Festival) and UIL Solo & Ensemble and UIL Concert & Sight-Reading. Dance students participate in the Middle School Dance Festival and Dance Montage. Theatre students participate in UIL One Act Play.

  1. Students participate in at least one fine arts field trip during the school year.

  1. Schools partner with at least one professional arts organization that will provide supplemental in-school programming and/or after school opportunities. These programs do not replace the TEKS-based education mentioned in #1.

Fine Arts –High School
  1. Schools offer at least (2) fine arts disciplines (art, dance, music, theatre) and every student competes at least one TEKS-based fine arts credit.

  1. Students participate in at least (4) art exhibits including the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Contest, the HISD Visual Arts Spring Showcase, VASE and Scholastic Art.

  1. All performing arts students participate in at least (3) school programs. In addition, band students participate in district sponsored contest (HISD Marching Contest, HISD Concert Band Contest, HISD Jazz Festival), UIL Solo & Ensemble, UIL Concert and Sight-Reading, Region Jazz Band and Region Marching Contest. Vocal students participate in UIL Solo & Ensemble and UIL Concert and Sight-Reading. Dance students participate in the HISD Middle School Dance Festival and HISD Dance Montage. Orchestra students participate in UIL Solo & Ensemble and UIL Concert and Sight-Reading. Theatre students participate in UIL One Act Play.
